One in five patients with eating disorders (EDs) may take a lasting course. It has been proposed that this enduring group exhibits increased severity, such as low treatment response, severe symptomatology, and poor quality of life. However, there is no consensus defining this group. Moreover, most of the literature comes from high-income societies and may not apply to developing countries.
This study aimed to evaluate the association between endurance (length of ED) and severity (previous treatments, hospitalizations, medical complications, symptomatology and clinical impairment) in individuals with EDs from Chile. In addition, it aimed to explore the association between endurance and delays seeking specialized treatment.
Forty-one women with EDs (16 with anorexia nervosa, 11 with bulimia nervosa, 10 with binge eating disorder and 4 with other specified EDs) completed a social-demographic survey, the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire, and the Clinical Impairment Assessment. Our objective was to study to what extend mandatory quarantine imposed due to COVID-19 had affected behavioral symptoms in subjects with dementia after the first 8 weeks of quarantine. We invited family members to participate in a questionnaire survey. The sample consisted of family caregivers (n = 119) of persons with AD or related dementia living at home. We designed a visual analog scale to test the level of the burden of care of family members. Items inquired in the survey included type and setting (home or day care center) of rehabilitation services (physical/occupational/cognitive rehabilitation) and change in psychotropic medication and in behavioral symptoms that subjects with dementia experienced before and during the epidemic. Characteristics of people with dementia and their caregivers were analyzed with descriptive statistics using the chi-square tes rehabilitation services had been discontinued in most subjects due to the quarantine. We concluded from our analysis that during COVID-19 epidemic there was a deterioration of behavioral symptoms in our population of elderly dementia subjects living in the community. Here, we synthesize evidence from human studies of adolescent cannabis users showing alterations in cognitive performance as well as in brain structure and function with relevant preclinical evidence to summarize the current state of knowledge. We also focus on the limited evidence that speaks to the hypothesis that cannabis use during adolescence, may pose a greater risk than use during adulthood, identify gaps in current evidence and suggest directions for new research. Existing literature is consistent with the association of cannabis use durial trivialization of possible harm from cannabis use in adolescence. Current evidence indicates that adolescence is a sensitive period during which cannabis use may result in adverse neurocognitive effects that appear to show a level of permanency into adulthood.
We previously demonstrated that the high heterogeneity of response to computerized Auditory Training (AT) in psychosis can be ascribed to individual differences in sensory processing efficiency and neural plasticity. Here, we investigate whether the ability of APS to function as a proxy for target engagement is unique to AT, or if it applies to other training interventions, such as Executive Functioning Training (EFT). Additionally, we examine whether changes in APS are durable after these two forms of training.
