Chromium-containing solid wastes have been generated by chemical and leather/tanning industries, and the management and proper disposal of the same wastes have been challenging tasks. A significant fraction of these wastes contains chromium compounds with chromium present in the hexavalent (Cr+6) form, which is hazardous to human beings, animals, and ecosystems. Since these wastes are discarded largely without proper treatments, soil and groundwater get contaminated and they can cause several health issues to human beings. Conventional methods developed to convert hazardous Cr6+ to Cr3+/Cr metal either generate secondary toxic wastes and unwanted by-products and/or are time-consuming processes. In this work, a plasma-assisted aluminothermic process is developed to convert the toxic waste into non-toxic products. The waste was mixed with aluminium powder and subjected to transferred arc plasma treatment in a controlled air atmosphere. Chemical analysis and Cr leachability studies of the waste material prior to plasma treatment have shown that it is highly toxic. Analysis of the products obtained from the plasma treatment showed that Cr and Fe present in the waste could be recovered as a metallic mixture as well as oxide slag, which were found to be non-toxic. Easy separation of the metallic fraction and the slag from the treated product is one of the merits of this process. Besides converting chromium-containing toxic waste to non-toxic materials, the process is rapid and recovers the metals from the waste completely.The increase in the area treated with the insecticide fipronil has caused concern for aquatic organisms such as fish. Here, we assessed the effect of fipronil on carp indexes of non-specific immunity, oxidative stress, autophagy, and apoptosis following exposure to 0.074 mg/L and 0.185 mg/L of fipronil in the aqueous environment for 1 day, 3 days, 5 days, and 7 days. It was found that glutathione (GSH), malonaldehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in gills were significantly reduced (P less then 0.05). The increase in exposure time increases the impact on GSH, SOD, and MDA parameters in the liver and intestine. Liver acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), and lysozyme (LZM) activity levels increased significantly in the treatment group on the first day after exposure, except for the 0.074 mg/L group of ACP (P less then 0.05). The mRNA expression levels of autophagy-related genes ATG12, ATG5, ATG16L, LC3-II, and BECN1 were generally elevated in the liver and intestine during the initial exposure period (P less then 0.05), while mTOR was significantly reduced on the first and third days after treatment (P less then 0.05). From the results of Western blotting (WB), we can see that the amount of LC3-II was significantly higher than that of LC3-I at 1, 3, and 5 days of exposure (P less then 0.05). Furthermore, the apoptosis-related gene Bcl-2 reached its peak in the liver, intestine, and gill on the first day, and caspase3 was significantly downregulated throughout the exposure period (P less then 0.05). The results showed that fipronil was potentially harmful to carp and should be used moderately to reduce the damage to aquatic ecosystems. This study complements the mechanism theory of fipronil on fish toxicology and has a certain value for human health risk assessment.Few studies conducted in China have assessed the effects of ambient air pollution exposure on tuberculosis (TB) risk and mortality, especially with a multicity setting. We evaluated the effect of short- and long-term ambient sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), and particulate matter≤2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) exposures on development and mortality of active TB in 7 Chinese cities in Shandong province from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2017. We estimated the pollution-associated risk to new infection TB, recurrent TB, and mortality in relation to 1-μg/m3 increases in air pollutants using the penalized multivariate Poisson regression models. A total of 83,555 new infective TB and 3060 recurrent TB including 997 deaths were recorded. Short- and long-term exposures to outdoor air pollutants (SO2, NO2, CO, O3, and PM2.5) were significantly associated with new infection TB, recurrent TB risk, and mortality. Scriptaid The dominant positive effects of SO2, NO2, CO, and PM2.5 for new infection and recurrent TB risk were observed at long-term (>30 days) exposure, whereas the dominant effects of SO2, CO, and PM2.5 for mortality were observed at short-term (≤30 days) exposures. Of the 5 air pollutants we assessed, SO2 and PM2.5 exhibited more consistent and strong associations with TB-related outcomes. We estimated an increase of 1.33% (95% CI 1.29%, 1.37%) and 3.04% (95% CI 2.98%, 3.11%) in new infection TB count for each 1-μg/m3 increase of SO2 at lag 0-180 days and PM2.5 at lag 0-365 days, respectively. This epidemiologic study in China shows that air pollution exposure is associated with increased risk of active TB development and mortality. The control of ambient air pollution may benefit the control and decrease the mortality of TB disease.This paper aims to identify and evaluate the landscape and natural resource (traditional ecological knowledge) social values of marine and coastal ecosystem services (MCESs) in Kyrenia (Girne) Region of Northern Cyprus. To this end, the objectives of the study were (1) to identify and evaluate the key landscape social values of MCESs, and (2) to record and assess the major marine and coastal natural resources harvested as traditional ecological knowledge. Participatory and deliberative research techniques were used to uncover both value types. The data on the marine and coastal natural resources as traditional ecological knowledge were obtained from the stakeholders through 6 in-depth discussion groups and 9 in-depth interviews. The quantitative data on the landscape social values of MCESs were collected with a questionnaire designed. Within this context; the respondents scored the importance of MCESs on a five-point Likert scale. The results showed that the stakeholders hold six landscape social values of MCESs aesthetic, entertainment, life-sustaining, biodiversity, recreation, and nutrition.
