The approach can be straightforwardly extended to other similar metrics, such as time-in-range and time-above-range, widely adopted by clinicians. This strengthens its potential utility in diabetes research, e.g., in the design of those clinical trials where minimal CGM monitoring duration is crucial in cost-effectiveness terms.Mechanism of Fenton reaction, which is a most widely-used degradation test for organic materials using hydrogen peroxide (HO) and iron (Fe) cations, is revealed for the decomposition of hydrated Nafion membrane. This reaction mechanism has been assumed to generate OH radicals. For a doubly-hydrated Nafion membrane model, Fenton reaction with divalent and monovalent Fe (Fe and Fe) cation hydration complexes is explored for experimentally-supported hydration numbers using long-range correction for density functional theory. As a result, it is found that HO coordinating to the Fe hydration complexes first approaches Nafion side chains in high humidity, then leads to the C-S bond dissociation of the side chain to produce carbonic acid group and sulfonic acid ion. On the other hand, once electron transfer proceeds between iron ions, the O-O bond of the coordinating HO is extended, then the C-S bond is dissociated to produce trihydroxymethyl group and sulfur trioxide, which are rapidly transformed to carboxyl group and sulfonic acid ion in aquo. This mechanism is confirmed by the vibrational spectrum analysis of the decomposed product. Collective Nafion decomposition mechanisms also suggest that the decomposition reaction uses the recycle of generated Fe cation hydration complexes under acidic condition near membrane surface.Spatial gradients of species richness can be shaped by the interplay between historical and ecological factors. They might interact in particularly complex ways in heterogeneous mountainous landscapes with strong climatic and geological contrasts. click here We mapped the distribution of 171 lizard species to investigate species richness patterns for all species (171), diurnal species (101), and nocturnal species (70) separately. We related species richness with the historical (past climate change, mountain uplifting) and ecological variables (climate, topography and vegetation). We found that assemblages in the Western Zagros Mountains, north eastern and north western parts of Central Iranian Plateau have the highest number of lizard species. Among the investigated variables, annual mean temperature explained the largest variance for all species (10%) and nocturnal species (31%). For diurnal species, temperature change velocity shows strongest explained variance in observed richness pattern (26%). Together, our results reveal that areas with annual temperature of 15-20 °C, which receive 400-600 mm precipitation and experienced moderate level of climate change since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) have highest number of species. Documented patterns of our study provide a baseline for understanding the potential effect of ongoing climate change on lizard diversity in Iran.To guide the selection of osteosynthesis systems, this study compared the mechanical properties of biodegradable and titanium osteosynthesis systems. SonicPins Rx and xG were subjected to pull-out tests. Additionally, 15 biodegradable (Inion CPS 2.0 and 2.5 mm; LactoSorb 2.0 mm; Macropore 2.0 mm; Polymax 2.0 mm; BioSorb FX 2.0 mm; ResorbX 2.1 mm; Osteotrans-MX 2.0 mm with plate thicknesses 1.0 and 1.4 mm; SonicWeld Rxplate/Rxpins, xGplate/Rxpins and xGplate/xGpins 2.1 mm without and with tapping the burr hole) and six titanium (CrossDrive (2006), CrossDrive (2018), MaxDrive; all 1.5 and 2.0 mm) straight, four-hole osteosynthesis systems were evaluated. All systems were subjected to tensile, bending and torsion tests. Pull-out loads of the SonicPins were comparable (P = 0.423). Titanium systems’ tensile loads were higher than biodegradable systems (P  less then  0.001). CrossDrive (2018) and MaxDrive systems’ tensile and torsional stiffness were lower, accompanied with higher ductility, than corresponding Crosies and non-load bearing mandibular fractures, especially when high torsional forces are expected (e.g., mandibular symphysis fractures). An amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via a link at the top of the paper. This study compared effects of plasma-activated medium (PAM) with effects of conventional clinical thermal therapy on both lung cancer cells and benign cells for management of malignant pleural effusion (MPE). For MPE treatment, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and thermal therapy are used but caused systemic side effects, patient photosensitivity, and edema, respectively. Recent studies show that plasma induces apoptosis in cancer cells with minor effects on normal cells and is cost-effective. However, the effects of plasma on MPE have not been investigated previously. This study applied a nonthermal atmospheric-pressure plasma jet to treat RPMI medium to produce PAM, carefully controlled the long-life reactive oxygen and nitrogen species concentration in PAM, and treated the cells. The influence of PAM treatment on the microenvironment of cells was also checked. The results indicated that PAM selectively inhibited CL1-5 and A549 cells, exerting minor effects on benign mesothelial and fibroblast cells. In contrast to selective lethal effects of PAM, thermal therapy inhibited both CL1-5 and benign mesothelial cells. This study also found that fibroblast growth factor 1 is not the factor explaining why PAM can selectively inhibit CL1-5 cells. These results indicate that PAM is potentially a less-harmful and cost-effective adjuvant therapy for MPE.An amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via a link at the top of the paper. The earth has been undergoing climate change, especially in recent years, driven by increasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and rising earth-surface temperature, which could reduce N allocation to Bt toxin for transgenic Bt crops (Bt crops), but the N fertilization is considered to be an effective method to enhance the C-N balance in Bt crops in the case of elevated CO2 in future. DNA methylation not only in promoterregion but also in codingregion of transgene plays a critical role in transgene expression regulation and silencing of transgenic crops. Recent research has emphasized the risks of increased transgene silencing of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) rice under elevated CO2. In this study, the effects of elevated CO2 (vs. ambient CO2) on exogenous Bt toxins and transgene expression in promoterregion and codingregion of Bt rice during tillering stage (cv. HH1 expressing fused Cry1Ab/Cry1Ac) were evaluated under three nitrogen (N) fertilizer rate (1/4, 1 and 2 N levels). The aboveground and belowground biomass, and foliar Bt protein content of Bt rice were all significantly increased with the augmentation of N-fertilizer.
