Doxorubicin based chemotherapy is standard first line treatment for patients with soft tissue sarcoma. Currently several options to improve survival after doxorubicin based chemotherapy are being studied. This study reports on survival after completing 6 cycles of doxorubicin containing first line treatment, which is important when designing studies trying to improve outcomes of first line treatment.
A retrospective database analysis was performed on 2045 patients from 12 EORTC sarcoma trials (inclusion period 1980-2012) receiving first line doxorubicin based chemotherapy for advanced soft tissue sarcoma in order to establish progression free survival and overall survival after completing 6 cycles of first line doxorubicin based chemotherapy. SB202190 Endpoints were overall survival and progression free survival. Factors studied were histologic subtype and type of doxorubicin chemotherapy.

This large retrospective study is the first to report progression free survival and overall survival after completion of 6 cycles of first line doxorubicin containing chemotherapy. These results are important when designing new studies exploring for example maintenance therapy after doxorubicin based chemotherapy.
Snakebite envenoming (SBE) is an important occupational and public health hazard especially in sub-Saharan Africa. For optimum management of SBE, adequate knowledge of Snake antivenom (SAV) is very critical among the healthcare practioners in this region. Information related to the knowledge of SAV use in the management of SBE, as well as SAV logistics is scarce among the Health Care Professionals (HCPs) in Nigeria, particularly in the northern region. We therefore aimed to develop, validate and utilize a tool to assess the SAV knowlegde among HCPs in northern Nigeria. We also sought to implement and evaluate an intervention that could improve the SAV knowledge among the HCPs.
The proposed study will be conducted in three phases Phase I will involve the development of the item-pool to be included in the tool, followed by a face, content validity and construct validity. The tool reliability, readability and difficulty index will be determined. Phase II will involve the utilization of the tool to assess basand logistics is very relevant among healthcare professionals, particularly those that are directly involved in its logistics. It is paramount that SAV is handled and used appropriately. The efforts and advocacy for the availability for more SAV will be in vain if not handled appropriately before they are used. This study protocol aims to develop a tool, to assess SAV knowledge and effects of educational interventions among healthcare professionals (HCPs) in northern Nigeria. Regardless of the various technologies being discovered in addressing invasiveness and enhancing medication adherence in the management of type 1 diabetes, yet limited success had been observed among children and adolescents. The multiple daily subcutaneous insulin injections route using vial and syringe, and occasionally insulin pens, remain the most predictable route for insulin administration among children and adolescents. However, this route has been associated with compromised patient compliance, fear of injections and unacceptability, resulting in poor glycemic control, which promote the demand for alternative routes of insulin administration. Alternative routes for delivering insulin are being investigated in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes; these include the hybrid closed-loop ‘artificial pancreas’ system, oral, inhalation, intranasal routes, and others. This review article explores the current advances in insulin-delivery methods that address the needs of children and adolescents in the treatment of type 1 diabetes.A range of bioreactors use linear actuators to apply tensile forces in vitro, but differences in their culture environments can limit a direct comparison between studies. The widespread availability of 3D printing now provides an opportunity to develop a ‘universal’ bioreactor chamber that, with minimal exterior editing can be coupled to a wide range of commonly used linear actuator platforms, for example, the EBERS-TC3 and CellScale MCT6, resulting in a greater comparability between results and consistent testing of potential therapeutics. We designed a bioreactor chamber with six independent wells that was 3D printed in polylactic acid using an Ultimaker 2+ and waterproofed using a commercially available coating (XTC-3D), an oxirane resin. The cell culture wells were further coated with Sylgard-184 polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to produce a low-adhesion well surface. With appropriate coating and washing steps, all materials were shown to be non-cytotoxic by lactate dehydrogenase assay, and the bioreactor was waterproof, sterilisable and reusable. Tissue-engineered tendons were generated from human mesenchymal stem cells in a fibrin hydrogel and responded to 5% cyclic strain (0.5 Hz, 5 h/day, 21 days) in the bioreactor by increased production of collagen-Iα1 and decreased production of collagen-IIIα1. Calcification of the extracellular matrix was observed in unstretched tendon controls indicating abnormal differentiation, while tendons cultured under cyclic strain did not calcify and exhibited a tenogenic phenotype. The ease of manufacturing this bioreactor chamber enables researchers to quickly and cheaply reproduce this culture environment for use with many existing bioreactor actuator platforms by downloading the editable CAD files from a public database and following the manufacturing steps we describe.
