Sarcopenia is commonly encountered in patients with advanced cancer, but the role of sarcopenia in predicting prognosis in this group of patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) remains undetermined. The aim of this study was to performed the first meta-analysis focusing on the prognostic value of sarcopenia in patients with advanced cancer who were treated with ICIs comprehensively.
A systematic search for relevant studies in the Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase was conducted on August 19, 2020. Outcomes including response rate, 1-y progression-free survival (PFS) rate, 1-y overall survival (OS) rate, and hazard ratios (HRs) of PFS and OS were extracted. Meta-analysis was performed by using the STATA version 12 software package.
Nine cohort studies consisting of 740 patients with advanced cancer receiving ICIs were finally included for analysis. Routine assessment of sarcopenia status and correction of sarcopenic status should be emphasized for patients treated with ICIs. In pursuit of a religious fast, 36 adults abstained from eating poultry, meat, dairy products, and eggs, while increasing fish intake for 6 wk. Participants were assessed 1 wk before (W0) and 1 (W1) and 6 (W6) weeks after the diet change.
By W6, fasting plasma long-chain ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 LC-PUFAs); docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) had increased (+67% and +73%, respectively; P ≤ 0.001), with early rise of DHA (+22%), but not EPA at W1.The ω-3 index (sum of DHA and EPA as a percent of total fatty acids) increased from 2.1% to 3.4%. ARA decreased progressively (W1, -9%; W6, -16%; P < 0.001). ARA precursors γ-linolenic and dihomo-γ-linolenic acids also decreased, without changes in the ARA-derived mediators prostaglandin-E2 and leukotriene-B4. Myristic acid decreased at W1 (-37%) and W6 (-40%). There was no consistent change in SCD indices. At W6, systolic and diastolic blood pressure had declined by 8 and 5 mm Hg, respectively (P ≤ 0.013).
Shifting to a plant- and fish-based diet produces rapid and sustained increases in ω-3 LC-PUFAs and decreases the ω-6 PUFA ARA and its precursors, consistent with a cardio-protective profile. The rapid response suggests that these biomarkers may be useful for assessment of diet interventions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of diet reversal to standard chow on diet-induced changes in structure and function of normal and obstructed bladders in male Wistar rats.
Eighty animals were equally divided into sham-surgery and bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) dietary groups and fed standard chow (control), high-carbohydrate, high-fat, and high-protein diets. BOO groups had surgically induced BOO, whereas sham surgery was performed on sham groups at the end of week 8. Animals were continued on the treatment diets for 4 wk after surgery, then the diets were all changed to standard chow for the remainder of the study period. Bladder weight, detrusor contractility, Rho-associated protein kinase (Rho-kinase), and myosin light chain kinase were determined. Polymerase chain reaction was used to assay for transforming growth factor-β, connecting tissue growth factor, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α, and platelet-derived growth factor subunit A levels in the bladder. Views on the relationship between a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) and glucose levels are controversial, and no study, to our knowledge, has examined this association in postpartum women. We aimed to explore the association between postpartum LCD scores and glucose levels.
We included 500 postpartum women from a prospective cohort study in Guangzhou, China, during 2017 and 2018. Dietary information during the first month after delivery was assessed via a validated food frequency questionnaire. The overall, animal, and plant LCD scores were determined based on percentages of energy from carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Higher scores reflected higher intakes of fat and protein and lower intakes of carbohydrate. At 6 to 8 wk postpartum, women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus underwent oral glucose tolerance tests (n=104), and the others had fasting plasma glucose (FPG) tests (n=396). Multivariable linear, quantile, and logistic regressions were conducted.
Of the 500 participants, 71 (14.20%) developellitus were observed. Stronger associations were observed in women with lower FPG levels.
Individuals who have survived cancer may benefit from dietary modifications to improve quality of life and future health outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore dietary habits and experiences of nutritional support in patients with a cancer diagnosis who have received radiotherapy to the pelvic area.
A mixed-methods approach was used. Individuals diagnosed with a pelvic cancer (anal, bladder, rectal, and cancers of the reproductive organs), either undergoing or having completed pelvic radiotherapy 6 to 24 mo previously, were invited to participate in a postal survey. A purposive subsample was also invited to take part in telephone interviews. Thematic analysis of interview data was undertaken and integrated with data from quantitative analysis.
The survey was completed by 254 (38%) respondents.
