COPD mortality has decreased among Americans overall; however, there remain important sociodemographic groups that have not secured the same deceleration in death rates.Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine pain anxiety after acquired brain injury (ABI) and its relationship to rehabilitation outcomes.Materials and Method Participants consisted of 89 adults with an ABI participating in outpatient rehabilitation therapy. They completed a battery of neuropsychological tests at baseline along with surveys of mood, health-related self-efficacy, and pain anxiety. Separately, occupational therapists assessed basic and instrumental activities of daily living (ADLs) as well as therapy engagement across treatment after the sixth session.Results Individuals who reported high pain anxiety had fewer years of formal education, lower self-efficacy, and more emotional distress than those with low pain anxiety. Although Blacks were about half (56%) of the study sample, they comprised the majority (73.1%) of individuals in the high pain anxiety group. Pain anxiety was negatively related to therapy engagement. Moderation analysis using linear regression indicated that pain anxiety moderated the influence of self-efficacy on basic ADLs.Conclusions Pain anxiety, particularly when high, is negatively associated with rehabilitation outcomes for individuals with ABI. Among those with high pain anxiety, health-related self-efficacy is an important resilience characteristic to improve functional outcomes. In rehabilitation therapy, pain anxiety provides a novel intervention target to enhance ABI recovery.Ezetimibe (EZM) is a selective inhibitor of the sterol transporter Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 in the small intestine used as an adjunctive therapy to lower cholesterol levels in cases of hyperlipidemia. The goal of this work was to summarize the main physical-chemical, pharmacological and pharmacokinetic characteristics of EZM, as well as to describe the main analytical methodologies for the quantification of the drug. Methods described in the United States Pharmacopeia for EZM raw material and tablets were also presented. The drug has a large number of process-related impurities and degradation products and needs strict quality control of its impurities. Specific chiral methods for the evaluation of its chiral impurities are also a need for EZM. The main advantages and disadvantages of the compiled analytical methods were presented, as well as the limits of detection and quantitation. The fastest and most efficient methods were highlighted. Most methods for analyzing EZM used C8 or C18 stationary phases in gradient mode with binary mobile phases containing acetonitrile and an acidic buffer solution with ultraviolet detection. For analysis of EZM in biological matrices, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry is generally employed using electron spray ionization in negative ionization mode using multiple reaction monitoring. Automated pupillometry provides discrete variables such as dilation velocity (DV). The objective of this study is to determine association between DV and Glasgow Coma Score (GCS), for patients with acquired brain injury.Methods There were 2,208 patients with acquired brain injury, pupillometer readings, and daily GCS values available in our registry. Generalized Linear Mixed Model regression was used to identify correlation between DV and GCS.Results Patient mean age was 58.9 years, and 49.11% were female. There were 42,229 observations of GCS and DV. Mean admission GCS was 11.7. In the left eye, there was a statistically significant negative association for mean DV in patients with mild (DV = 0.85 mm/s), moderate (DV = 0.71 mm/s), and severe (DV = 0.48 mm/s) injury (p less then .0001). Similar results were noted in the right eye with mild (DV = 0.87 mm/s), moderate (DV = 0.72 mm/s), and severe (DV = 0.50 mm/s) injury (p less then .0001).Conclusion Higher GCS is associated with faster DV. Plasma D-dimer levels were measured in critically ill patients to examine their relationship with the poor outcome. The plasma D-dimer levels were markedly higher in the patients with various underlying disease especially venous thromboembolism in comparison to those without severe underlying diseases. The plasma D-dimer levels in non-survivors were significantly higher than those in survivors. In a receiver operating characteristic analysis, the area under the curve was high for the disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) score, the D-dimer value, and the prothrombin time-international normalize ratio (PT-INR). Adequate cut-off values for predicting the outcome were 3 as follows DIC score, 3 points; D-dimer, 4.2 mg/L; and PT-INR, 1.08. D-dimer, which is a biomarker for thrombosis, is increased in various underlying diseases and predicts a poor outcome.This special issue was open for submissions in the field of big data in business.
