A stable and calm relationship between patient and caregiver, characterised by reciprocity, mutual help and affection affected patient self-care provided at home and the caregiver burden. The concept of mutuality seems to describe this relationship, despite the patient’s dependence on the caregiver. The relationship with health professionals and educational interventions could influence the quality of the relationship. Further studies are needed to describe the quality of the relationship in this dyad, to investigate the presence of mutuality and how it affects patient and caregiver outcomes.Advances in the design of potential bone-selective drugs for the treatment of various bone-related diseases are creating exciting new directions for multiple unmet medical needs. For bone-related cancers, off-target/non-bone toxicities with current drugs represent a significant barrier to the quality of life of affected patients. For bone infections and osteomyelitis, bacterial biofilms on infected bones limit the efficacy of antibiotics because it is hard to access the bacteria with current approaches. Promising new experimental approaches to therapy, based on bone-targeting of drugs, have been used in animal models of these conditions and demonstrate improved efficacy and safety. Previous data from our laboratory have demonstrated that localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) patients produce elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to TLR4 and TLR2 ligation compared to unrelated and periodontally healthy controls (HC). The aim of the present work is to evaluate the contribution of TLR-related gene expression and miRNA regulation in LAP disease.
Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from LAP and health control (HC) patients were isolated. Gene and miRNA expression involved in TLR signalling pathway and immunopathology were evaluated in unstimulated PBMCs by real-time PCR (RT-PCR).
TICAM-1 (TRIF), FOS, IRAK1, TLR2 and CCL2 genes and the miRNAs miR-9-5p, miR-155-5p and 203a-3p, miR-147a, miR-182-5p and miR-183-5p were significantly up-regulated in LAP compared to HC.
Most of the genes and miRNAs overexpressed here are directly or indirectly related to immune response and inflammation. This profile supports our previous findings that suggests LAP patients have a “hyper-responsive” phenotype upon activation of TLR pathway by periodontal pathogens.

Previous studies showed that procedural fairness promotes cooperation; however, they mainly focused on cooperation intention, which may fail to reveal actual cooperative behaviour. Moreover, little is known regarding the personality boundary of the effect of procedural fairness on cooperation. Guided by previous findings that self-esteem increases sensitivity to procedural unfairness, we attempted to explore the moderating effect of self-esteem on the association between procedural fairness and cooperative behaviour. In Experiment 1, 160 participants’ self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale; procedural fairness was manipulated in two conditions, depending on whether money was allocated in an economic game by rolling the dice twice or an allocator’s arbitrary choice. Cooperative behaviour was assessed using the chicken game paradigm. Experiment 2 (148 participants) aimed to replicate and extend the results of Experiment 1 using a more rigorous experimental design, in which the possible effect of outcome favourability was excluded. The results of both experiments consistently showed that procedural fairness positively predicted cooperative behaviour, and this association was significant in high-self-esteem individuals, but not in low-self-esteem individuals. These findings shed light on the vital role of self-esteem in understanding the relationship between procedural fairness and cooperative behaviour.Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) is the latest identified small gaseous mediator enabled by its lipophilic nature to freely permeate the biological membranes. Initially, H2 S was recognized by its roles in neuronal activity and vascular relaxation, which makes it an important molecule involved in paracrine signalling pathways. Recently, the immune regulatory function of gasotransmitters, H2 S in particular, is increasingly being appreciated. Endogenous H2 S level has been linked to macrophage activation, polarization and inflammasome formation. Mechanistically, H2 S-induced protein S-sulphydration suppresses several inflammatory pathways including NF-κB and JNK signalling. Moreover, H2 S serves as a potent cellular redox regulator to modulate epigenetic alterations and to promote mitochondrial biogenesis in macrophages. Here in this review, we intend to summarize the recent advancements of H2 S studies in macrophages, and to discuss with focus on the therapeutic potential of H2 S donors by targeting macrophages. The feasibility of H2 S signalling component as a macrophage biomarker under disease conditions would be also discussed.
This study aims to (1) assess learner demographics of Introduction to Dental Medicine (IDM), an early Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) developed for the Coursera platform and (2) analyze course enrollment to determine worldwide interest in accessible, high-quality dental education.
The authors review the development and organization of IDM and present learner statistics to critically evaluate learner traits and course engagement for IDM.
IDM has been available since June 15, 2015, and as of March 1, 2020, gained 90,374 visitors, of whom 16,739 have enrolled and demonstrate continued monthly and daily engagement. Learners represent all age groups and genders and include participants of all educational and employment backgrounds, reflecting broad interest in dental knowledge. They originate from 6 continents with the largest percentages of learners from countries including the United States, Egypt, India, and the United Kingdom. IDM learners have provided positive feedback, rating the course 4.8/5 stars and often providing individual accounts of the benefit of their experiences.
