COVID-19 is known to cause an acute respiratory illness, although clinical manifestations outside of the respiratory tract may occur. Early reports have identified SARS-CoV-2 as a cause of subacute thyroiditis (SAT).
A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. MEDLINE, Web of Science and PubMed databases were queried in February 2021 for studies from December 2019 to February 2021. MeSH search terms “COVID-19”, “SARS-CoV-2” and “coronavirus” along with search terms “thyroiditis”, “thyrotoxicosis”, “thyroid” were used. Descriptive statistics for continuous variables and proportions for categorical variables were calculated.
15 publications reporting on 17 individual cases of COVID-19 induced SAT were identified. Age ranged from 18 to 69 years old. The majority of the cases were female (14 of 17, 82%). The delay between onset of respiratory symptoms and diagnosis of SAT ranged from 5 to 49 days (mean, 26.5). Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) related to viral infection was uncommonly reported at the time of SAT diagnosis. Thyroid ultrasonography frequently reported an enlarged hypoechoic thyroid with decreased vascularity and heterogenous echotexture. Elevated CRP was common at the time of SAT diagnosis, with results ranging from 4.5 to 176 mg/L (mean, 41 mg/L). Anti-thyroid antibodies were frequently negative. SAT specific treatment included corticosteroids for 12/17 (70.5%) patients. Most return to normal thyroid status.

Clinical benefits of local antibiotics as an adjunct to nonsurgical treatment of peri-implantitis have been widely reported, but most studies evaluated incipient peri-implantitis lesions, and showed incomplete treatment success rates.
To assess the clinical and microbiological outcomes of administering metronidazole in combination with minocycline as a local adjunct to the nonsurgical treatment of peri-implantitis.
One hundred and eighteen subjects with peri-implantitis were recruited in a four-center, three-arm, and 12-week randomized controlled trial. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive one of the following treatments (a) MM-mechanical debridement + metronidazole-minocycline ointment, (b) MC-mechanical debridement + minocycline ointment, (c) NST-mechanical debridement only.

The prevalence of SCH in Australia is approximately 4-5% and is higher in females and the elderly. Current evidence suggests thyroid hormone therapy is not associated with an improvement in HRQoL. However, there does appear to be a subgroup of those with SCH that experience an impairment in HRQoL who may potentially benefit from treatment. Because the majority of research to date has been done in elderly, largely asymptomatic individuals, this may not be representative of the entire SCH population. Additionally, alternative treatments such as exercise therapy have not been well explored in the literature, despite exercise therapy’s effects on HRQoL in other populations. Central sensitisation, mediated by amplified processing in the central nervous system, has been identified as the key pathogenic mechanism in these disorders. The term ‘central sensitivity’ can be used to collectively describe the clinical presentation of these disorders. Fibromyalgia is highly prevalent in most rheumatic diseases as well as non-rheumatic chronic diseases and if unrecognised results in high morbidity. It is diagnosed clinically after excluding important differential diagnoses. Diagnostic criteria have been developed as tools to help identify and diagnose fibromyalgia. Such tools can fulfill an important need when managing patients with rheumatic disease and other chronic diseases as a way to identify fibromyalgia and improve patient outcomes. Treatment involves an integrated approach including education, exercise, stress reduction and pharmacological therapies targeting the central nervous system. This approach is suitable for all presentations of central sensitivity and some central sensitivity syndromes have additional treatment options specific to the clinical presentation.
