    This work shows great potential for a simple coating of graphene and AgNFs to produce high-performance thermally-operated soft actuators.This study identified and determined organochloride pesticide (OCs) concentrations in hair samples from children at two elementary schools one exposed to fumigations in agricultural fields, the other unexposed. Three concentrations of OCs levels in the hair were compared (high, medium, low), and total nuclear abnormalities in buccal cells were determined micronuclei (MNi), condensed chromatin, karyorrhexis, pyknosis, binucleate cells, karyolysis, lobed nuclei, and apoptosis. No significant differences were found for the presence of MNi between the schoolchildren from the exposed and unexposed schools, but the prevalence of OCs in both schools was over 50%, as well as the frequencies of MNi in the children were over 58%. Findings show a significant difference between the frequency of MNi in the total sample of schoolchildren (exposed school + unexposed school) in relation to the concentration of OCs detected in their hair. The children from exposed school that showed the higher concentrations of OCs in hair had higher levels of genotoxic damage in the buccal cells; compared against children with lower concentrations of OCs. The most frequent nuclear abnormalities in the exposed children were lobed nuclei (79.4%), binucleate cells (66.66%), apoptosis (65.07), and MNi (58.7%). We determined the prevalence ratio (PR) and prevalence odds ratio (POR) for the presence of MNi in buccal cells in relation to the OCs concentrations in the hair samples. Both ratios were high for MNi , indicating a 7.97 times greater risk that the exposed children will present > 0.2% of MNi when OCs concentrations exceed 0.447 μg/g. These indicators may be useful biomarkers of genotoxic damage in children exposed to persistent, highly-toxic compounds. Results suggest the potential risk to which those schoolchildren are exposed on a daily basis due to fumigations in nearby agricultural fields.The digestive health of cows is one of the primary factors that determine their well-being and productivity. Under- and over-feeding are both commonplace in the beef and dairy industry; leading to welfare issues, negative environmental impacts, and economic losses. Unfortunately, digestive health is difficult for farmers to routinely monitor in large farms due to many factors including the need to transport faecal samples to a laboratory for compositional analysis. This paper describes a novel means for monitoring digestive health via a low-cost and easy to use imaging device based on computer vision. find more The method involves the rapid capture of multiple visible and near-infrared images of faecal samples. A novel three-dimensional analysis algorithm is then applied to objectively score the condition of the sample based on its geometrical features. While there is no universal ground truth for comparison of results, the order of scores matched a qualitative human prediction very closely. The algorithm is also able to detect the presence of undigested fibres and corn kernels using a deep learning approach. Detection rates for corn and fibre in image regions were of the order 90%. These results indicate the potential to develop this system for on-farm, real time monitoring of the digestive health of individual animals, allowing early intervention to effectively adjust feeding strategy.The relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and cardiovascular (CV) mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been described as either a J- or U-shaped function. However, its effect in non-diabetic CKD (and varying severities of CKD) remains unclear. We analyzed the database of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, USA, from the years 1999 to 2010. We then grouped the subjects into 4 categories according to their SUA levels (a)  less then  5 mg/dl, (b) 5-7 mg/dl, (c) 7-9 mg/dl and (d) ≥ 9 mg/dl. For mortality comparison purposes (CV related, cancer related and all-cause mortality), we set the SUA group of 5-7 mg/dl as the reference. We also separated this population into moderate (stage 3) and severe (stages 4 and 5) CKD. A total of 1860 participants were included in this study. Results showed that the group with the lowest SUA levels ( less then  5 mg/dl), were the least male gender (19.25%), had the lowest body mass index (26.41(95% CI = 25.66-27.16) kg/m2), highest systth moderate CKD (eGFR = 30-60 ml/min/1.832m2), the group with SUA ≥ 9 had a significantly increased all-cause mortality. In moderate non-DM CKD, SUA ≥ 9 mg/dl is associated with higher all-cause mortality. However, once progressing to severe non-DM CKD, SUA  less then  5 mg/dl is associated with higher all-cause mortality (even though it has the least risk factors for metabolic syndrome).GABA is a key regulator of adult-born dentate granule cell (abDGC) maturation so mapping the functional connectivity between abDGCs and local interneurons is required to understand their development and integration into the hippocampal circuit. We recorded from birthdated abDGCs in mice and photoactivated parvalbumin (PV) and somatostatin (SST) interneurons to map the timing and strength of inputs to abDGCs during the first 4 weeks after differentiation. abDGCs received input from PV interneurons in the first week, but SST inputs were not detected until the second week. Analysis of desynchronized quantal events established that the number of GABAergic synapses onto abDGCs increased with maturation, whereas individual synaptic strength was constant. Voluntary wheel running in mice scaled the GABAergic input to abDGCs by increasing the number of synaptic contacts from both interneuron types. This demonstrates that GABAergic innervation to abDGCs develops during a prolonged post-mitotic period and running scales both SST and PV synaptic afferents.Fluorinated graphene has a tunable band gap that is useful in making flexible graphene electronics. But the carbon-fluorine (C-F) bonds in fluorinated graphene can be easily broken by increased temperature or electron beam irradiation. Here, we demonstrate that the stability of fluorinated graphene is mainly determined by its C-F configuration. The double-sided fluorinated graphene has a much stronger stability than the single-sided fluorinated graphene under the same irradiation dose. Density functional theory calculations show that the configuration of double-sided fluorinated graphene has a negative and low formation energy, indicating to be an energetically stable structure. On the contrary, the formation energy of single-sided fluorinated graphene is positive, leading to an unstable C-F bonding that is easily broken by the irradiation. Our findings make a new step towards a more stable and efficient design of graphene electronic devices.
