    Contemporary times have seen the metaverse become one of the most well-liked and discussed concepts. A spirited competition to invest and participate in this virtual world ensues among both companies and entrepreneurs. Millions of people, regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity, or cultural background, are anticipated to dedicate substantial time to the immersive experience of the metaverse across the globe. Few comprehensive studies examine the growing metaverse, a nascent concept with a still not well-defined nature, and its positive/negative sentiment and impact on the digital sphere. This investigation aimed to elucidate the metaverse concept by, initially, classifying sentiments as positive or negative, and subsequently, by exploring connections between the metaverse and related concepts. Utilizing Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods, specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI), this study performed a computational qualitative analysis. The data source was The Guardian, a significant global news outlet, publishing metaverse articles between 2021 and 2022, which formed the dataset. The Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK) from NLP libraries, in conjunction with Leximancer software, assisted this research in identifying sentiment within the qualitative data, facilitating thematic analysis. Using a sector-focused classification approach, the principal subjects uncovered by the Leximancer analysis were then refined by an AI-driven Monkeylearn API. Among the key themes identified in the Leximancer analysis were the metaverse, Facebook, games, and various platforms. The sentiment analysis performed on metaverse articles published between 2021 and 2022 indicated that 61% (n=622) expressed positive sentiment, 30% (n=311) negative sentiment, and 9% (n=90) neutral sentiment. Positive pronouncements on the metaverse concentrated on the pivotal innovations in virtual user and corporate experiences, underpinned by blockchain, algorithms, and NFTs, with significant momentum from the gaming sector. Negative commentary regarding Facebook and other social media platforms revealed significant issues, ranging from misinformation and harmful content to problems with algorithms, data, and equipment, indicating user harm within the metaverse, or potentially introducing new problems within this virtual space. The Monkeylearn study indicated that marketing, advertising, PR work, recreational ventures, and scientific and technological events were major content areas. This study’s contribution is two-fold. First, it provides a novel triangulation strategy for analyzing qualitative data from extensive unstructured texts to explore the metaverse. Second, it unveils the characteristics of the metaverse concept and its associations with other related concepts. Given the nascent nature of the metaverse concept, this investigation, in our estimation, is the first of its kind to accomplish both goals.
