Participants (N=337) were university students who completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale and five selected subscales of the WHO COVID-19 Behavioural Insights Tool. The mean loneliness scores were significantly higher than previous studies in other contexts as well as studies conducted in the time of COVID-19. Correlational analysis found that greater perceived risk of infection, limited perceived knowledge of COVID-19 and lower appraisals of resilience were associated with increased loneliness. In a regression analysis, when all COVID-19 variables were considered simultaneously, only resilience, self-rated knowledge, and risk perception emerged as significant correlates of loneliness. These findings suggest that loneliness is a significant public health concern in South Africa in the time of COVID-19. It also suggests that self-efficacy and resilience can potentially be reinforced by public health campaigns that focus on enhancing COVID-19-related knowledge and preparedness.Most of the animal studies using inflammation-induced cognitive change have relied on behavioral testing without objective and biologically solid methods to quantify the severity of cognitive disturbances. We have developed a bispectral EEG (BSEEG) method using a novel algorithm in clinical study. This method effectively differentiates between patients with and without delirium, and predict long-term mortality. In the present study, we aimed to apply our bispectral EEG (BSEEG) method, which can detect patients with delirium, to a mouse model of delirium with systemic inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) injection. We recorded EEG after LPS injection using wildtype early adulthood mice (2~3-month-old) and aged mice (18-19-month-old). Animal EEG recordings were converted for power spectral density to calculate BSEEG score using the similar BSEEG algorithm previously developed for our human study. The BSEEG score was relatively stable and slightly high during the day. Alternatively, the BSEEG score was erratic and low in average during the night. LPS injection increased the BSEEG score dose-dependently and diminished the diurnal changes. The mean BSEEG score increased much more in the aged mice group as dosage increased. Our results suggest that BSEEG method can objectively “quantify” level of neuro-Inflammation induced by systemic inflammation (LPS), and that this BSEEG method can be useful as a model of delirium in mice.Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is increasingly recognized as a common brain disorder with aberrant brain networks. Alterations in dynamic functional brain networks have been widely reported in MDD. However, previous studies mainly focused on detecting non-overlapping sub-networks/communities, neglecting the possibility that one brain region may belong to multiple sub-networks/communities. In the present work, we utilized tensor decomposition method to detect overlapping communities and study the dynamism of overlapping sub-networks through 58 patients with MDD and 63 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC). The strength vectors of communities were calculated and two-sample t-test was performed to investigate the statistical significance of the differences in dynamism of MDD and HC groups. We found that communities detected in two groups were pairwise region-matching but overlapped brain regions were almost totally different. We considered two region-matching communities in the two groups as a sub-network. Compared to HCs, MDD patients showed significantly decreased dynamism in five sub-networks which could be functionally mapped to Visual Network (VN), Default Mode Network (DMN), Cognitive Control Network (CCN), Bilateral Limbic Network (BLN) and Auditory Network (AN). The results showed that MDD might only have a marginal effect on the holistic detection of communities and the changes of overlapped brain regions in MDD patients might be put down to the alteration of hubs. To determine the clinical phenotype of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) after Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, the anti-glycolipid antibody signature, and the role of other circulating arthropod-borne viruses, we describe a cohort of GBS patients identified during ZIKV and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) outbreaks in Northeast Brazil.
We prospectively recruited GBS patients from a regional neurology center in Northeast Brazil between December 2014 and February 2017. Serum and CSF were tested for ZIKV, CHIKV, and dengue virus (DENV), by RT-PCR and antibodies, and serum was tested for GBS-associated antibodies to glycolipids.
Seventy-one patients were identified. Forty-eight (68%) had laboratory evidence of a recent arbovirus infection; 25 (52%) ZIKV, 8 (17%) CHIKV, 1 (2%) DENV, and 14 (29%) ZIKV and CHIKV. Most patients with a recent arbovirus infection had motor and sensory symptoms (72%), a demyelinating electrophysiological subtype (67%) and a facial palsy (58%).
