Due to the strict control on bisphenol A (BPA) in many countries, bisphenol analogues (BPs) are being widely used as alternative materials to manufacture epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics, resulting in their occurrence in sewage treatment plants (STPs). In this study, the occurrence and distribution of 7 BPs in a large-scale STP in Beijing China was investigated. Wastewater samples were collected from the influents and effluents of each processing unit, and extracted by solid-phase extraction. Target compounds were quantified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The total concentrations of seven BPs (ΣBPs) were 400.42 ± 48.12 ng/L in the raw sewage, 438.60 ± 46.50 ng/L in the primary effluent, 17.21 ± 13.12 ng/L in the secondary effluent, and 11.33 ± 4.84 ng/L in the tertiary effluent, respectively. Bisphenol S (BPS) and BPA were the predominant congener in raw sewage with an overall contribution of 29.32% and 70.22% to the ΣBPs, indicating that there was a large amount of BPS and BPA consumption in the study area. During a one-week sampling period, ΣBPs changed slightly at the same sampling site. It was found that high removal efficiencies were achieved for BPs in anoxic and oxic secondary clarifier treatment units, suggesting that biodegradation and sorption played major roles in BPs elimination in the STP. After tertiary treatment, all BPs except BPA were completely removed, suggesting the necessity to investigate the fate and toxicity of BPA in the aquatic environment.

Tibial plateau fractures are serious complications of Oxford mobile-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (OUKA). This study examined where the fracture lines arises and evaluated the keel-cortex distances (KCDs) using three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) and the effects of technical error (assessed by tibial component positions) and proximal tibial morphology on the KCDs.

This retrospective study included 217 OUKAs with cementless tibial components. Fifteen patients had tibial fractures after surgery. Anterior and posterior KCDs and fracture line origins were assessed using 3D-CT postoperatively. Proximal tibial morphology was assessed using the medial eminence line (MEL), which runs parallel to the tibial axis and passes through the tip of the medial intercondylar eminence of the tibia on long-leg anteroposterior radiograph. Knees had overhanging medial tibial condyle if the MEL passed medially to the medial tibial cortex. KCDs were compared between patients with/without fractures. Tibial ial component (too medial, low, and valgus) and/or a medial overhanging condyle exhibit a shorter distance of posterior KCD and higher rate of fracture.

Several anatomical parameters have been associated with increased risk of anterior cruciate ligament rupture; however, published studies provide conflicting results. The objectives of this study are to assess whether there is a relationship between anterior cruciate ligament rupture and the lateral and medial posterior tibial slopes, as well as the lateral and medial posterior meniscal slopes and posterior tibial and meniscal delta-slopes.

A retrospective case-control study was conducted in professional soccer athletes, using images from knee magnetic resonance imaging scans in athletes with clinical and radiological diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament rupture, and control group, with no signs of ligament rupture.

The lateral and medial posterior tibial slopes, the lateral and medial posterior meniscal slopes, and the posterior tibial and meniscal delta-slopes showed significant differences between the groups (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis logistic regression revealed that the lateral and medial posterior meniscal slopes proved to be predictors for increased risk of anterior cruciate ligament rupture in professional soccer players.

Posterior tibial and meniscal slopes and tibial and meniscal delta-slopes are related to a greater risk of rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in professional male soccer athletes. The lateral and medial posterior meniscal slopes are predictors for ligament rupture.

Recent genome mining approaches have revealed an enormous number of secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters (smBGCs) in actinomycetes. However, under standard laboratory culture conditions, many smBGCs are silent or cryptic. To activate these dormant smBGCs, several approaches, including culture-based or genetic engineering-based strategies, have been developed. Above all, coculture is a promising approach to induce novel secondary metabolite production from actinomycetes by mimicking an ecological habitat where cryptic smBGCs may be activated. In this review, we introduce coculture studies that aim to expand the chemical diversity of actinomycetes, by categorizing the cases by the type of coculture partner. Furthermore, we discuss the current challenges that need to be overcome to support the elicitation of novel bioactive compounds from actinomycetes. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted persons with HIV interfering with critical health services for HIV prevention, treatment, and care. While there are multiple profiles of persons living with HIV and the impact of COVID-19 may differ for each, the severity of COVID-19 disease in persons with HIV is related strongly to the presence of comorbidities that increase the risk of severe disease in COVID-19 patients in the absence of HIV. An effective response to the juxtaposition of the HIV and COVID-19 pandemics requires a novel coordinated and collaborative global effort of scientists, industry, and community partners to accelerate basic and clinical research, as well as implementation science to operationalize evidence-based interventions expeditiously in real-world settings. The accelerated development and clinical evaluation of prevention and treatment countermeasures is urgently needed to mitigate the juxtaposition of the HIV and COVID-19 pandemics.
