    Among the studied rotaviruses, there were equal proportions of Wa and DS-1-like strains; previous studies showed that Wa-like strains accounted for the largest proportion of rotaviruses in Russia.Recently discovered preventive effects of probiotics on oral health have attracted interest to their use for the prevention and treatment of various diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of Weissella cibaria against Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, S. pneumoniae, and Moraxella catarrhalis, the major pathogens of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). The antimicrobial activities of W. cibaria were compared with those of other oral probiotics using a competitive inhibition assay and the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). In addition, a time-kill assay, spectrophotometry, and confocal laser scanning microscopy were used to confirm the antimicrobial and antibiofilm abilities of W. cibaria CMU (oraCMU) and CMS1 (oraCMS1). Both live cells and cell-free supernatants of all tested probiotics, except Streptococcus salivarius, showed excellent antimicrobial activities. All target pathogens were killed within 4 to 24 h at twice the MIC of oraCMU and oraCMS1, which showed the highest antimicrobial activities against M. catarrhalis. The antimicrobial substances that affected different target pathogens were different. Both oraCMU and oraCMS1 showed excellent abilities to inhibit biofilm formation and remove preformed biofilms. Our results suggest that the W. Thus, it is crucial to design an effective MAC protocol that minimizes energy consumption while guaranteeing high network throughput and low delay. In this article, we propose a quorum-based multichannel MAC protocol (QMMAC) for corona-based WSNs. QMMAC utilizes the multichannel communication feature and the quorum concept to greatly increase the throughput while conserving energy. The aim of this protocol is to allow each node and all its forwarders to wake up at the same time while avoiding collision and overhearing by separating their simultaneous communications using the multichannel feature. More precisely, the main idea of QMMAC is twofold. First, QMMAC wakeup scheduling is designed to minimize the end-to-end delay by allowing nodes to wake up at exactly the same time as their potential forwarders, whereas nodes that are not acting as forwarders for each other wake up at a completely different time, and thus overhearing, idle listening and collisions are avoided. Second, channel assignment, which also uses the concept of quorums, is used to share data channels so that there is no conflict or additional packet exchange required to negotiate the availability of channels. Thus, the end-to-end delay is further minimized as well as collisions between conflicting neighbors are avoided. Simulation results indicate that the network performance is improved by QMMAC in terms of energy efficiency, throughput and end-to-end delay.Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II); CDDP) is a key chemotherapeutic agent but causes renal damage and other off-target effects. Here, we describe the pharmacological and biochemical characteristics of a novel formulation of CDDP complexed with γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) and chitosan (CS), γ-PGA/CDDP-CS, developed by complexing CDDP with γ-PGA, then adding CS (15 kDa; 10 mol%/γ-PGA). We analyzed tumor cytotoxicity in vitro, as well as blood kinetics, acute toxicity, and antitumor efficacy in vivo in BALB/cAJcl mice. γ-PGA/CDDP-CS showed pH-dependent release in vitro over 12 days (9.1% CDDP released at pH 7.4; 49.9% at pH 5.5). It showed in vitro cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner similar to that of uncomplexed CDDP. In a mesothelioma-bearing mouse model, a 15 mg/kg dose of CDDP inhibited tumor growth regardless of the type of formulation, complexed or uncomplexed; however, all mice in the uncomplexed CDDP group died within 13 days. γ-PGA/CDDP-CS was as effective as free CDDP in vivo but much less toxic.Low- and moderate-impact physical activity (PA) is associated with the prevention of urinary incontinence (UI). The objective of the cross-sectional study presented herein is to analyze the factors associated with UI in physically older active women who participate in senior community groups. The variable UI was measured by the International Consultation Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF). Socioeconomic variables were also collected, along with data on life habits and clinical history. The multivariate analysis employed Poisson’s Regression with robust variance for factors associated with UI. Of the 106 participants evaluated, 54.7% presented UI, of which stress incontinence was more frequent, with 40.6%. UI presented a statistically significant association with dizziness/loss of balance during Activities of Daily Living (ADL) (prevalence ratio-PR 1.48; 95% CI 1.06-2.07) and nocturia (PR 1.63; 95% CI 1.05-2.55). Despite PA being a protection factor, UI presented an elevated prevalence in the older population, and therefore, other biological, social, and cultural aspects could also contribute to the occurrence of UI in this age group. Moreover, physically active older women with UI presented nocturia and dizziness/loss of balance during ADL, regardless of education levels and the number of births. These findings can help improve multi-professional programs aimed at promoting, preventing, and managing UI in the public.Host cells can recognize cytosolic double-stranded DNAs and endogenous second messengers as cyclic dinucleotides-including c-di-GMP, c-di-AMP, and cGAMP-of invading microbes via the critical and essential innate immune signaling adaptor molecule known as STING. This recognition activates the innate immune system and leads to the production of Type I interferons and proinflammatory cytokines. In this review, we (1) focus on the possible role of bacterial cyclic dinucleotides and the STING/TBK1/IRF3 pathway in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and the regulation of periodontal immune response, and (2) review and discuss activators and inhibitors of the STING pathway as immune response regulators and their potential utility in the treatment of periodontitis. PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched with the terms “STING”, “TBK 1”, “IRF3”, and “cGAS”-alone, or together with “periodontitis”. Current studies produced evidence for using STING-pathway-targeting molecules as part of anticancer therapy, and as vaccine adjuvants against microbial infections; however, the role of the STING/TBK1/IRF3 pathway in periodontal disease pathogenesis is still undiscovered.
