Phytomining of nickel (Ni) refers to cropping of selected Ni hyperaccumulator plants on Ni-rich serpentine soils. In this study, the effect of different fertilization regimes on the Ni yield of Odontarrhena chalcidica (syn. Alyssum murale) was evaluated within a field experiment on an Austrian serpentine site. Odontarrhena chalcidica was planted in six treatments control, fertilized by mineral fertilizer, cow manure, pig manure, compost, and planted at higher plant density. A positive fertilization effect was observed plants treated with NPK and pig manure produced significantly higher biomass (1.9 t ha-1 for both treatments). Nickel yields showed a clear trend for enhancement upon fertilization (cow manure 22.7 kg Ni ha-1, pig manure 21.3 kg Ni ha-1, NPK 20.6 kg Ni ha-1), but were not significantly different from the control. As a result of Ni accumulation in plants, DTPA-extractable Ni pools were significantly lower after harvesting (average 37.3 mg kg Ni-DTPA-1) compared to the time of planting (average 45.6 mg kg Ni-DTPA-1) in organic fertilization treatments and plots of higher plant density. The application of organic fertilizers contributed also to improved soil quality. We conclude that fertilization can increase the phytomining potential of field-grown Ni hyperaccumulator plants in a soil-friendly manner. The innate immune system plays a significant role in onset of parturition. Maternal antenatal physical activity can influence immune function and timing of labour. We examined physical activity patterns and concentration of 19 cytokines at 16 and 27 weeks gestational age (GA), in peripheral plasma of 28 asymptomatic women who later had spontaneous preterm labour (SPTL, less then 37 weeks GA) and 52 women who later delivered at term (TL; ≥37 weeks GA). This nested case-control study used data from the Ontario Birth Study cohort. Exercise was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and cytokines were analyzed using Luminex assays. There was no significant difference in exercise patterns between SPTL and TL subjects. Plasma concentration of interleukin (IL)-10 was significantly higher in SPTL women at 16 and 27 weeks, while tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), IL-8, and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 concentrations were increased at 27 weeks GA (p less then 0.05). Concentration of IL-10 was negatively correlated with the amount of reported walking (ρ = -0.264, p = 0.03). Women should be encouraged to partake in low-intensity exercise throughout pregnancy, as it may confer a protective effect against SPTL through IL-10-mediated pathways. Additionally, plasma cytokine analysis at 27 weeks GA may be useful for predicting SPTL in asymptomatic women. Novelty In women that delivered preterm, plasma levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 were significantly elevated at 16 and 27 weeks of gestation. Plasma levels of IL-10 were negatively correlated with the amount of reported walking. Concentration of IL-8, MCP-1 and TNF-α were increased in plasma of asymptomatic women that subsequently deliver preterm.Trichogramma species make up one of the most commonly used groups of natural enemies for biological control programs worldwide. Given the major successes in using Trichogramma to control economically important lepidopterous pests on agricultural crops in China, the biology and ecology of these wasps have been intensively studied to identify traits that contribute to successful biological control. Since the 1960s, improved mass production of Trichogramma and better augmentative release methods to suppress agricultural pests have been achieved. AL39324 We review the history of research and development; current knowledge on biodiversity and bio-ecology of the species used; and achievements in mass-rearing methods, release strategies, and current large-scale applications in China. In addition, we discuss potential issues and challenges for Trichogramma research and applications in the future. The plant Nothapodytes nimmoniana is an important source of camptothecin (CPT), an anticancer compound widely used in the treatment of colorectal, lung, and ovarian cancers. CPT is biosynthesized by the combination of the seco-iridoid and indole pathways in plants. The majority of the biosynthetic steps and associated genes still remain unknown. Certain reactions in the seco-iridoid pathway are catalyzed by cytochrome P450 enzymes. Hence, identifying transcriptionally active cytochrome P450 genes becomes essential in the elucidation of the CPT biosynthetic pathway. Here, we report the identification of 94 cytochrome P450s from the assembled transcriptomic data from leaf and root tissues of N. nimmoniana. The identified cytochrome P450 genes were full length and possessed all four conserved characteristic signature motifs of cytochrome P450 genes. Phylogenetic analysis of the protein sequences revealed their evolution and diversification and further categorized them into A-type (52.12%) and non-A-type (47.87%) cytochrome P450s. These 94 sequences represent 38 families and 63 subfamilies of cytochrome P450s. We also compared the transcriptional activity of identified cytochrome P450s with the expression of their homologs in the CPT-producing plant Ophiorrhiza pumila. Based on expression profiles and quantitative PCR validation, we propose NnCYP81CB1 and NnCYP89R1 as candidate cytochrome P450 genes involved in camptothecin biosynthesis in N. nimmoniana.Previous work has found that the Breakfast Task (BT), a computerized, ecologically informed executive ability measure, is sensitive to group differences in aging, acquired brain injury, and Parkinson’s disease. We investigated whether this measure improves the prediction of functional status over and above standard measures of general intellectual ability, relationship perception, life skills, and symptom severity in individuals with schizophrenia. Regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the joint and incremental validity of the BT in predicting functional disability scores on the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Scale (WHODAS 2.0). Analyses with combined patient (n = 25) and control (n = 32) participants showed that participant status (patients versus control) was the only significant predictor of functional outcome. However, in the patient data, the proportion of variance accounted for improved significantly (model R2 of 4% vs. 25%) when BT scores were added to a model containing clinical (Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale), social (Relationships Across Domains), intellectual (Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence), and life skills (Canadian Objective Assessment of Life Skills) measures.
