Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) describes an array of painful conditions that are characterized by continuing regional pain. CRPS comprises severe and inappropriate pain in cases of complete recovery after trauma. Research on the pharmacological treatment of CRPS, however, has not been well investigated. In this study, we compared the pain relief effects of different drugs (URB597, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, and hydralazine) in a rat model of chronic post-ischemic pain-induced CRPS. After drug injection, CRPS-induced mechanical allodynia was significantly recovered. After three repetitive drug injections, mechanical sensitivity generally improved as hyper-nociception subsided. Reduced Nav1.7 expression at dorsal root ganglions (DRGs) was observed in the drug treatment groups. Neural imaging analysis revealed decreased neural activity for each drug treatment, compared to vehicle. In addition, treatments significantly reduced IL-1β, IL-6, and TNFα expression in DRGs. These results indicated that drugs could reduce the expression of inflammatory factors and alleviate the symptoms of chronic post-ischemic pain-induced CRPS.Duckweeds are small, fast growing, and starch- and protein-rich aquatic plants expected to be a next generation energy crop and an excellent biomaterial for phytoremediation. Despite such an importance, very little is known about duckweed-microbe interactions that would be a key biological factor for efficient industrial utilization of duckweeds. Here we first report the duckweed growth promoting ability of bacterial strains belonging to the phylum Acidobacteria, the members of which are known to inhabit soils and terrestrial plants, but their ecological roles and plant-microbe interactions remain largely unclear. Two novel Acidobacteria strains, F-183 and TBR-22, were successfully isolated from wild duckweeds and phylogenetically affiliated with subdivision 3 and 6 of the phylum, respectively, based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. In the co-culture experiments with aseptic host plants, the F-183 and TBR-22 strains visibly enhanced growth (frond number) of six duckweed species (subfamily Lemnoideae) up to 1.8-5.1 times and 1.6-3.9 times, respectively, compared with uninoculated controls. Intriguingly, both strains also increased the chlorophyll content of the duckweed (Lemna aequinoctialis) up to 2.4-2.5 times. Under SEM observation, the F-183 and TBR-22 strains were epiphytic and attached to the surface of duckweed. Taken together, our findings suggest that indigenous plant associated Acidobacteria contribute to a healthy growth of their host aquatic plants.Plants harbor a diverse community of microbes, whose interactions with their host and each other can influence plant health and fitness. While microbiota in plant vegetative tissues has been extensively studied, less is known about members of the seed microbiota. We used culture-based surveys to identify bacteria and fungi found in the seeds of the model tree, Populus trichocarpa, collected from different sites. We found that individual P. trichocarpa seeds typically contained zero or one microbe, with common taxa including species of Cladosporium, Aureobasidium, Diaporthe, Alternaria, and Pseudomonas, a bacterium. Pseudomonas isolates were associated with seed mortality and were negatively associated with the occurrence of fungal isolates within Epicoccum, Alternaria, and Aureobasidium from the same seed. Next, we conducted an inoculation experiment with one of the isolated seed microbes, Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, and found that it reduced seed germination and increased seedling mortality for P. trichocarpa. Our findings highlight common fungi and bacteria in the seeds of P. trichocarpa, prompting further study of their functional consequences. Moreover, our study confirms that P. syringae pv. syringae is a seed pathogen of P. trichocarpa and is the first report that P. syringae pv. syringae is a lethal seedling pathogen of P. E-7386 trichocarpa, allowing for future work on the pathogenicity of this bacterium in seedlings and potential antagonism with other seed microbes.Long-term exposure to occupational noise is often associated with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) among dentists. This study aims to investigate potential hearing loss (HL) and self-reported annoyance as a result of exposure to noise produced by contemporary dental equipment.
Three cohorts participated 53 dentists with more than 5 years of service, 47 dentists with at most 5 years of service, and 53 pharmacists as controls, age and gender-matched to the first group. After the exclusion of one person, the hearing of 304 ears was screened with the Flemish version of the digit triplet in noise test (DTT). If screening failed, otoscopy and pure tone audiometry (PTA) were performed for both ears. Furthermore, general information, knowledge, exposure, annoyance, general health, and preventive measures were assessed with a custom-made questionnaire.
NIHL did not occur significantly more often with dentists than with controls. However, dentists revealed a significantly higher annoyance (related to the noise from their equipment) and reported more complaints than the pharmacists. All three groups indicated lack of knowledge on hearing care.
While noise levels in contemporary dentistry are not harmful and do not induce NIHL, the sounds emitted by the devices are disturbing and affect mental health. This study calls for increased awareness of the consequences of sound exposure and stresses the need to monitor and protect the hearing of dentists regularly.

Salmonellosis outbreaks can be caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public health and safer food production. Nevertheless, the drivers of MDR Salmonella serovars have remained poorly understood. In this study, we compare the resistance profiles of Salmonella strains isolated from 4047 samples from domestic and wild animals in Chile. A total of 106 Salmonella strains (2.61%) are isolated, and their serogroups are characterized and tested for susceptibility to 16 different antimicrobials. The association between antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and a subset of independent variables is evaluated using multivariate logistic models. Our results show that 47 antimicrobial-resistant strains were found (44.3% of the total strains). Of the 47, 28 correspond to single-drug resistance (SDR = 26.4%) and 19 are MDR (17.9%). S. Enteritidis is highly persistent in animal production systems; however, we report that serogroup D strains are 18 times less likely to be resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent than the most common serogroup (serogroup B).
