To evaluate the effectiveness of ultraviolet (UV)-A/Riboflavin corneal cross-linking (CXL) for the treatment of the refractory cases of fungal keratitis.
In this prospective interventional study, 9 patients with the diagnosis of fungal keratitis that were referred to our emergency eye center were included. These patients were resistant to conventional treatment and underwent therapeutic UV-A/Riboflavin CXL. Response to the treatment was considered as good if rapid epithelialization and rapid decrease in stromal infiltration was occurred after PACK-CXL, and poor when the emergency transplantation was necessary to eradicate the infection.
Nine patients treated with CXL due to recalcitrant fungal keratitis. Culture of the corneal scrapings showed
species in 4 patients, Candida albicans in 1 patient and
species in the remainder of them. CXL was performed from 1 to 20 days after the presentation of corneal ulcers (Mean 9.12 ± 4.02; range 5-20 days). Postoperatively, the mean time to epithelialization was 14.25 ± 2.38 days, and mean time to resolution of stromal infiltration was 22.5 ± 7.29 days, in responsive cases. Four out of 9 eyes showed good response, and five patients showed no response, and corneal transplantation was performed to eradicate the infection. There was no statistically significant difference in mean depth of infiltration and mean size of ulcer between responsive and unresponsive patients (
= 0.86 and 0.08, respectively).
Although UV-A/Riboflavin CXL is not a definite treatment for all of the fungal keratitis, it seems promising in the management of some refractory cases.

To describe the epidemiology of ocular and periocular tumors in patients presenting to a multi-tier ophthalmology hospital network in India using the electronic medical records (EMRs) system.
A retrospective, observational, referral, hospital-based study of 1,142,098 patients. The data were collected using the in-house developed EyeSmart EMR system.
During a 6-year study period, 9633 (0.8%) new patients were diagnosed with eye tumors. Of the 9633 patients, 5209 (54%) were male and 4424 (46%) were female. Of all tumors, 6372 (65%) were benign, 282 (3%) were pre-malignant, and 3089 (32%) were malignant in nature, respectively. Overall, the three most common tumors included retinoblastoma (
= 1167, 12%), ocular surface squamous neoplasia (
= 957, 10%), and conjunctival nevus (

Supercross is characterized by fast and skillful movements, with high concentration being required on an indoor competition circuit, due to the demanding jumps and short distances to the next obstacle. The injuries can turn out to be diverse, including polytraumatization. This paper aims to evaluate the accidents and possible injuries in a single Supercross competition. To what extent is the presence of medical staff required?
During the 17th International Supercross Event in Chemnitz, 93 participants started in 5 classes. Severe injuries were treated at the track, through the emergency department and hospital stay to their discharge.
Overall 5 participants (4.65%) had to be admitted to the clinic.

Blood loss continues to be a common surgical risk in total hip (THR) and knee replacements (TKR). Accurate prediction of blood loss permits appropriate counselling of risks to patients, target optimisation and forecasting future transfusion requirements. We compared blood volume formulae of Moore and Nadler, and blood loss formulae of Liu, Mercuriali, Bourke, Ward, Gross, Lisander and Meunier, to assess associations between calculated values with length of stay and transfusion requirements and determine which are useful in contemporary practice.

We collected data on patient demographics, surgical interventions, pre- and postoperative haemoglobin and haematocrit values, length of stay and blood transfusion requirements. Current research in colorectal surgery focuses on searching for techniques which could minimize the risk of leakage. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of cumulative fluid balance on microcirculatory changes at the anastomotic site.This experimental study used 15 domestic pigs; all of the animals underwent rectal resection. Then the animals were divided into three groups and received IV crystalloids at various rates, i.e. 5 ml/kg/h; 10 ml/kg/h; and 20 ml/kg/h. Large bowel micro-perfusion was measured using laser Doppler flowmetry during and following the surgical procedure.The experiments were successfully performed in all 15 cases. No animal died during the procedure or during the follow-up. We found no differences in micro-perfusion of the bowel between the experimental groups during the surgical procedure and during the follow-up period after the surgery. A significant decrease in micro-perfusion was observed after the transection of the inferior mesenteric artery in all the groups; again, no differences between the groups were observed.
