    The adsorption of SMX conducted over a group of representative MOFs with different physicochemical properties and detailed characterization confirmed that the high adsorption capacity of the porphyrin MOFs is achieved by H-bonding between the SMX molecule and the N-sites of the porphyrin units in the MOFs, π-π interaction, and the high surface area. The adsorbents were easily regenerated by simple washing with acetone and reusable with >95% efficiency during 4 repeated adsorption-desorption cycles. Ozone (O3) is a triatomic form of oxygen. O3 can be administered via the systemic and local routes. Although O3 is known as one of the most powerful oxidants, it also promotes antioxidant enzymes. Additionally, it stimulates some of the cells of the immune system and inactivates pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, yeasts, protozoa, and viruses. Owing to these activities, O3 is used to improve several diseases, both in human and in veterinary medicine. Considering the wide scope of O3 application, the aim of this review was to reiterate the mechanisms of action of O3 and its utilization in different mammalian species (bovine, ovine-caprine, equine, canine, porcine). Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a severe complication of type 1 diabetic (T1D) patients, manifested as combined diastolic and systolic dysfunction. DCM is associated with impaired calcium homeostasis secondary to decreased calcium-sensitive receptor (CaSR) expression. Spermine, a direct agonist of CaSR, was found deficient in cardiomyocytes of T1D rats. However, the role of spermine in DCM was unclear. Here, we examined the cardioprotective effect of exogenous spermine on DCM in streptozotocin (STZ) induced-T1D rats and high-glucose (HG)-incubated neonatal rat cardiomyocytes. Exogenous spermine significantly attenuated cardiac dysfunction in T1D rats, characterized by improved echocardiography, less fibrosis, reduced myocardial endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and oxidative stress, and increased expression of myocardial membrane CaSR. In cultured neonatal rat cardiomyocytes, exogenous spermine attenuated myocardial injury induced by HG treatment, demonstrated by restored cellular glucose uptake capacity, reduced expression of apoptotic markers, lowered level of oxidative stress, ER stress and unfolded protein response, and upregulated cell membrane CaSR. Mechanistically, the cardioprotective effect of spermine appeared dependent upon effective elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and up-regulation of CaSR expression by suppressing the Nrf2-ROS-p53-MuRF1 axis. Taken together, these results suggest that exogenous spermine protects against DCM in vivo and in vitro, partially via suppressing ROS and p53-mediated downregulation of cell membrane CaSR. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE IMPT improves normal tissue sparing compared to VMAT in treating oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). Our aim was to assess if this translates into clinical benefits. MATERIALS AND METHODS OPC patients treated with definitive or adjuvant IMPT or VMAT from 2013 to 2018 were included. All underwent prospective assessment using patient-reported-outcomes (PROs) (EORTC-QLQ-H&N35) and provider-assessed toxicities (CTCAEv4.03). End-of-treatment and pretreatment scores were compared. PEG-tube use, hospitalization, and narcotic use were retrospectively collected. Statistical analysis used the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test with propensity matching for PROs/provider-assessed toxicities, and t-tests for other clinical outcomes. RESULTS 46 IMPT and 259 VMAT patients were included; median follow-up was 12 months (IMPT) and 30 months (VMAT). Baseline characteristics were balanced except for age (p = 0.04, IMPT were older) and smoking (p 20PYs, 29.3% VMAT). IMPT was associated with lower PEG placement (OR = 0.27; 95% CI 0.12-0.59; p = 0.001) and less hospitalization ≤60 days post-RT (OR = 0.21; 95% CI0.07-0.6, p  less then  0.001), with subgroup analysis revealing strongest benefits in patients treated definitively or with concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CRT). IMPT was associated with a relative risk reduction of 22.3% for end-of-treatment narcotic use. CONCLUSION IMPT is associated with improved PROs, reduced PEG-tube placement, hospitalization, and narcotic requirements. Mucositis, dysphagia, and pain were decreased with IMPT. Benefits were predominantly seen in patients treated definitively or with CRT. PURPOSE This study aimed to quantify the coverage probability for esophageal cancer radiotherapy as a function of a preset margin for online MR-guided and (CB)CT-guided radiotherapy. METHODS Thirty esophageal cancer patients underwent six T2-weighted MRI scans, 1 prior to treatment and 5 during neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy at weekly intervals. Gross tumor volume (GTV) and clinical target volume (CTV) were delineated on each individual scan. Follow-up scans were rigidly aligned to the bony anatomy and to the clinical target volume itself, mimicking two online set-up correction strategies a conventional CBCT-guided set-up and a MR-guided set-up, respectively. Geometric coverage probability of the propagated CTVs was assessed for both set-up strategies by expanding the reference CTV with an isotropic margin varying from 0 mm to 15 mm with an increment of 1 mm. RESULTS A margin of 10 mm could resolve the interfractional changes for 118 out of the 132 (89%) analyzed fractions when applying a bone-match registration, whereas the CTV was adequately covered in 123 (93%) fractions when the registration was directly performed at the CTV itself (soft-tissue registration). Closer analyses revealed that target coverage violation predominantly occurred for distal tumors near the junction and into the cardia. CONCLUSION Online MR-guided soft-tissue registration protocols exhibited modest improvements of the geometric target coverage probability as compared to online CBCT-guided bone match protocols. Therefore, highly conformal target irradiation using online MR-guidance can only be achieved by implementing on-table adaptive workflows where new treatment plans are daily generated based on the anatomy of the day.
