The induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has been shown to have therapeutic potential in experimental models of hepatitis and liver fibrosis, which are closely related to liver cancer. In humans, HO-1 induction is transcriptionally modulated by the length of a GT-repeat in the promoter region. We aimed to investigate the effect of HO-1 (GT)n variants on liver cancer in a human population. We determined the HO-1 genotype in 1153 study subjects and examined their association with liver cancer risk during a 15.9-year follow-up. Allelic polymorphisms were classified as short or long . Newly developed cancer cases were identified through linkage to the National Cancer Registry of Taiwan. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the effect of the HO-1 (GT)n variants. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and cirrhosis history were also examined. The S/S genotype was found to be significantly associated with liver cancer risk, compared to the L/S and L/L genotypes. The S/S genotype group also had a higher percentage of subjects with abnormal AFP levels than other groups. There were significant percentages of cirrhosis among groups who carried S-alleles. Our findings indicate that short (GT)n variants in the HO-1 gene may confer susceptibility to rather than protection from liver cirrhosis/cancer.Vehicle positioning is becoming an important issue related to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). Novel vehicles and autonomous vehicles need to be localized under different weather conditions and it is important to have a reliable positioning system to track vehicles. Satellite navigation systems can be a key technology in providing global coverage and providing localization services through many satellite constellations such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and so forth. However, the modeling of positioning and localization systems under different weather conditions is not a trivial objective especially considering different factors such as receiver sensitivity, dynamic weather conditions, propagation delay and so forth. This paper focuses on the use of simulators for performing different kinds of tests on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) systems in order to reduce the cost of the positioning testing under different techniques or models. Simulation driven approach, combined with some specific hardware equipment such as receivers and transmitters can characterize a more realistic scenario and the simulation can consider other aspects that could be complex to really test. In this work, the main contribution is the introduction of the Troposphere Collins model in a GNSS simulator for VANET applications, the GPS-SDR-SIM software. The use of the Collins model in the simulator allows to improve the accuracy of the simulation experiments throughout the reduction of the receiver errors. In rodents, we identified a physiologic process within the normal liver that creates a pre-metastatic niche. This physiology is weaning-induced liver involution, characterized by hepatocyte cell death, immune influx, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Here, using weaning-induced liver involution as a model of a physiologically regulated pro-metastatic niche, we investigate how liver involution supports breast cancer metastasis. Liver metastases were induced in BALB/c immune competent hosts by portal vein injection of D2OR (low metastatic) or D2A1 (high metastatic) mouse mammary tumor cells. Tumor incidence and multiplicity increased in involution hosts with no evidence of a proliferation advantage. D2OR tumor cell extravasation, seeding, and early survival were not enhanced in the involuting group compared to the nulliparous group. Rather, the involution metastatic advantage was observed at 14 days post tumor cell injection. This metastatic advantage associated with induction of immune tolerance in the involution host liver, reproductive state dependent intra-tumoral immune composition, and CD8-dependent suppression of metastases in nulliparous hosts. Our findings suggest that the normal postpartum liver is in an immune suppressed state, which can provide a pro-metastatic advantage to circulating breast cancer cells. Potential relevance to women is suggested as a postpartum diagnosis of breast cancer is an independent predictor of liver metastasis.A method for controlling the excitation of cladding modes by tapering special fiber insertions made of SM450 and coreless fibers is proposed. The coupling coefficients between the core mode and the cladding modes of the tapered fiber insertion are calculated. For the calculation, changes in the effective refractive indices and phases of the fiber core and in the cladding modes upon tapering are found. The field distribution of the core mode of the standard fiber transmitted through fiber insertion is obtained. The transmission characteristics of insertions of SM450 and coreless fibers during tapering are simulated and compared with the experiment. The possibility of controlling the transmission and excitation of various cladding modes is confirmed experimentally. In industry, ergonomists apply heuristic methods to determine workers’ exposure to ergonomic risks; however, current methods are limited to evaluating postures or measuring the duration and frequency of professional tasks. The work described here aims to deepen ergonomic analysis by using joint angles computed from inertial sensors to model the dynamics of professional movements and the collaboration between joints. This work is based on the hypothesis that with these models, it is possible to forecast workers’ posture and identify the joints contributing to the motion, which can later be used for ergonomic risk prevention. PDS-0330 mouse The modeling was based on the Gesture Operational Model, which uses autoregressive models to learn the dynamics of the joints by assuming associations between them. Euler angles were used for training to avoid forecasting errors such as bone stretching and invalid skeleton configurations, which commonly occur with models trained with joint positions. The statistical significance of the assumptions of each model was computed to determine the joints most involved in the movements.
