Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience minority stress, especially when they lack social support. SGM young adults may turn to social media in search of a supportive community; however, social media use can become problematic when it interferes with functioning. Problematic social media use may be associated with experiences of minority stress among SGM young adults.
The objective of this study is to examine the associations among social media use, SGM-related internalized stigma, emotional social support, and depressive symptoms in SGM young adults.
Participants were SGM young adults who were regular (≥4 days per week) social media users (N=302) and had enrolled in Facebook smoking cessation interventions. As part of a baseline assessment, participants self-reported problematic social media use (characterized by salience, tolerance, and withdrawal-like experiences; adapted from the Facebook Addiction Scale), hours of social media use per week, internalized SGM stigma, perceived emotion use.
Taken together, problematic social media use among SGM young adults was associated with negative psychological experiences, including internalized stigma, low social support, and depressive symptoms. SGM young adults experiencing minority stress may be at risk for problematic social media use.We investigated three SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.7 childcare centre and related household outbreaks. Public health measures should be revisited accordingly.The hospital water environment, including the wastewater drainage system, is increasingly reported as a potential reservoir for carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE). We investigated a persistent outbreak of OXA-48 CPE (primarily Citrobacter freundii) in a haematological ward of a French teaching hospital by epidemiological, microbiological and environmental methods. Between January 2016 and June 2019, we detected 37 new OXA-48 CPE-colonised and/or ‑infected patients in the haematological ward. In October 2017, a unit dedicated to CPE-colonised and/or ‑infected patients was created. Eleven additional sporadic acquisitions were identified after this date without any obvious epidemiological link between patients, except in one case. Environmental investigations of the haematological ward (June-August 2018) identified seven of 74 toilets and one of 39 drains positive for OXA-48 CPE (seven C. freundii, one Enterobacter sakazakii, one Escherichia coli). Whole genome comparisons identified a clonal dissemination of OXA-48-producing C. freundii from the hospital environment to patients. In addition to strict routine infection control measures, an intensive cleaning programme was performed (descaling and bleaching) and all toilet bowls and tanks were changed. These additional measures helped to contain the outbreak. This study highlights that toilets can be a possible source of transmission of OXA-48 CPE.COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness was evaluated in close contacts of cases diagnosed during January-April 2021. Among 20,961 contacts, 7,240 SARS-CoV-2 infections were confirmed, with 5,467 being symptomatic and 559 leading to hospitalisations. Molecular and epidemiological events contributing to the emergence of resistance to colistin, one of the ‘last-resort’ antibiotics to treat multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, are important to investigate.AimThis retrospective (2014 to 2017) observational study aimed to identify risk factors associated with acquisition of colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) in hospitals in Marseille, France, and to molecularly characterise clinical isolates.MethodsTo identify risk factors for CRKP, a matched-case-control (12) study was performed in two groups of patients with CRKP or colistin-susceptible K. pneumoniae respectively. Whole-genome-sequences (WGS) of CRKP were compared with 6,412 K. pneumoniae genomes available at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).ResultsMultivariate analysis identified male sex and contact with a patient carrying a CRKP as significant independent factors (p less then 0.05) for CRKP acquisition, but not colistin administration. WGS of nine of 14 CRKP clinical isolates belonged to the same sequence type (ST)307. These isolates were from patients who had been hospitalised in the same wards, suggesting an outbreak. Comparison of the corresponding strains’ WGS to K. pneumoniae genomes in NCBI revealed that in chromosomal genes likely playing a role in colistin resistance, a subset of five specific mutations were significantly associated with ST307 (p less then 0.001).ConclusionA ST307 CRKP clone was identified in this study, with specific chromosomal mutations in genes potentially implicated in colistin resistance. ST307 might have a propensity to be or become resistant to colistin, however confirming this requires further investigations.
To examine associations between maternal characteristics and feeding styles in Caribbean mothers.
Participants were mother-child pairs enrolled in a cluster randomised trial of a parenting intervention in three Caribbean islands. Maternal characteristics were obtained by questionnaires when infants were 6-8 weeks old. Items adapted from the Toddler Feeding Behaviour Questionnaire were used to assess infant feeding styles at the age of 1 year. Feeding styles were identified using factor analysis and associations with maternal characteristics assessed using multilevel linear regression.

Maternal depressive symptoms were associated with uninvolved (β = 0·38, 95 % CI (0·14, 0·62)), restrictive (β = 0·44, 95 % CI (0·19, 0·69)) and forceful (β = 0·31, 95 % CI (0·06, 0·57)) feeding and inversely associated with responsive feeding (β = -0·30, 95 % CI (-0·56, -0·05)). Maternal vocabulary was inversely associated with uninvolved (β = -0·31, 95 % CI (-0·57, -0·06)), restrictive (β = -0·30, 95 % CI (-0·56, -0·04)), indulgent (β = -0·47, 95 % CI (-0·73, -0·21)) and forceful (β = -0·54, 95 % CI (-0·81, -0·28)) feeding.
