However, biomass productivity of WT was delayed in respect for mutant strains under intermittent light conditions only, implying that PSII activity was not the limiting factor under excess light. Contrary to previous proposals, domestication of Chlamydomonas for carbon assimilation rate in photo-bioreactors by down-regulation of photoprotective energy dissipation was ineffective in increasing algal biomass productivity.Cancer immunotherapy (CI) represented by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) presents a new paradigm for cancer treatment. However, the types of cancer that attain a therapeutic benefit from ICIs are limited, and the efficacy of these treatments does not meet expectations. To date, research on ICIs has mainly focused on identifying biomarkers and patient characteristics that can enhance the therapeutic effect on tumors. However, studies on combinational strategies for CI are being actively conducted to overcome the resistance to ICI treatment. Moreover, it has been confirmed that dramatic anticancer effects are achieved through “neoadjuvant” immunotherapy with ICIs in treatment-naïve cancer patients; consequently, it has become necessary to consider how to best apply cancer immunotherapies for patients, even with respect to their tumor stages. In this review, we sought to discuss the right timing of ICI treatment in consideration of the progression of cancer with a changing tumor-immune microenvironment. Furthermore, we investigated which types of combinational treatments and their corresponding sequences of administration could optimize the therapeutic effect of ICIs to expand the applicable target of ICIs and increase their therapeutic efficacy. Finally, we discussed several delivery pathways and methods that can maximize the effect of ICIs.Functional materials that can recognize the tumor microenvironment, characterized by acidic or reducing conditions, are needed for the designing of drug delivery carriers for cancer treatment. Hydrogels are potential protein drug carriers because they contain a large amount of water and stimuli-responsive functions can easily be introduced in them. However, it is difficult to introduce multi-stimuli-responsive functions and degradability at the same time. Here, we synthesized thermo- and pH-responsive hydrogels via a coupling reaction between poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) and cystamine (CA). The prepared hydrogels showed lower critical solution temperature-type thermoresponsive behavior and pH-responsive swelling changes due to the protonation of secondary and/or tertiary amino groups arising from the crosslinking agent CA. Under reducing conditions, the hydrogels were degraded via the thiol exchange reaction in the presence of dithiothreitol or glutathione. The loading and release properties of FITC-labeled model proteins from the hydrogels were investigated. Bleximenib in vitro The loaded amount of the protein increased with decreasing molecular weight or hydrodynamic radius, which is based on the size of the network structure of the hydrogels. Notably, loaded proteins in the hydrogels were released only under reducing conditions, which mimic the tumor microenvironment. Thus, the prepared multi-responsive degradable hydrogels are expected to be used as functional drug delivery carriers for cancer treatment.
Thereare limited data regarding the long-term outcomes of spironolactone use for women with acne and its effect on truncal acne.
To comprehensively describe outcomes of patients treated with spironolactone in routine clinical practice, including long-term outcomes.
We performed a retrospective case series of 403 adult women treated for acne with spironolactone at an academic medical center between 2008 and 2019. Rates of objective, as assessed by Comprehensive Acne Severity Scale scores, and subjective acne clearance were evaluated, as well as rates of treatment discontinuation, dosage changes, and drug survival. Logistic regression was used to assess for association between incidence of menstrual adverse effects and combined oral contraceptive use.
As evaluated by Comprehensive Acne Severity Scale scores, at the first follow-up, 75.5%, 84.0%, and 80.2% of patients with available data had reduction or complete clearance of acne on the face, chest, and back, respectively. The mean drug survival was 470.7days. Menstrual adverse effects were less common among those using combined oral contraception (odds ratio, 0.23; 95% confidence interval, 0.11-0.50).
This study was conducted at a single academic medical center.
Spironolactone improves clinical outcomes and is well tolerated for many adult women with acne using it for an extended duration.

Health care-associated infections can be reduced through better environmental disinfection practices. Central to effective disinfection is the environmental service worker (ESW). The aim of this systematic literature review was to identify factors associated with the disinfection practices of ESWs in health care settings.
A systematic literature review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses principles. Ten online databases and search engines were selected for the review of English-language studies published between 2000 and 2019.
Thirty-one (31) eligible studies were identified. Environmental disinfection was associated with many factors (eg, knowledge, perceptions) as well as ESW exposure to education/training sessions. When education/training was combined with performance evaluation/feedback, significant improvement in ESW disinfection practices was reported.
To sustain improvements in disinfection practices, education/training sessions need to be continuous. The long-term commitment of an organization is also essential for continuous improvement in disinfection outcomes. While knowledge transfer is critical for behavior change, education/training also needs to focus on the skills and perceptions of ESWs. Future studies need to use a randomized controlled design with larger sample sizes to determine a true effect.
