The observation of both actor and partner effects in this study suggests opportunities to improve care recipient outcomes through intervention with caregivers or both members of the care dyad.

To investigate the dementia knowledge and care approach used by caregivers in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) in China.
A cross-sectional survey of 785 caregivers from a random sample of 34 RACFs in China. Caregivers’ knowledge and care approach were assessed using the Chinese version of the Dementia Knowledge Assessment Tool 2 and Advanced Dementia Care Questionnaire.
The majority of caregivers showed limited knowledge of dementia and tended not to adopt a person-centered approach to care. Educational level, dementia care training, and years of work experience were positively associated with dementia knowledge. Educational level and years of work experience were also associated with a person-centered approach to care.
This study provides insight into the care available to people with dementia in RACFs in China. The results suggest dementia care education programs as well as person-centered care training are urgently needed for caregivers in China.

The aim of this study was to understand the attitudes of front-line clinical nurses toward hospice care in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, to provide a source of reference for hospice care education and training in hospitals treating patients with COVID-19.
Front-line nurses from a designated COVID-19 hospital in Wuhan, China, participated. Participants completed the Chinese versions of the General Information Questionnaire, the Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Scale, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy, and the General Self-Efficacy Scale.
A total of 149 questionnaires were included in the analysis. The median total hospice care attitudes score was median 102.00(interquartile range, 95.5-120.50). The nurses’ attitudes toward hospice care were significantly associated with their age, knowledge of hospice care, level of empathy, and self-efficacy.
The attitudes of front-line nurses toward hospice care need to be improved. Hospital departments should establish an effective public health emergency strategy, provide training to increase front-line nurses’ knowledge and practical experience of hospice care, cultivate nurses’ empathy, and enhance their sense of self-efficacy, in order to improve the quality of hospice care for patients and their families.

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is considered a gold-standard, evidence-based and cost-effective approach to improve cognitive function and quality of life of people with mild to moderate dementia.
To validate CST for the Portuguese population and test its effectiveness.
A single-blind, multi-center, randomized controlled trial recruited 112 older people with dementia. The primary outcome measure was cognition and secondary measures were quality of life, communication, autonomy, anxiety, depression, and global functioning. find more We also explored whether CST benefits people differently according to context, gender and level of cognitive reserve.
Fifty-five people were randomized to the intervention and 57 to the control group. In the post-test, the intervention group significantly improved relative to controls in cognition (ADAS-Cog,
= 0.013), communication (HCS,
= 0.045), behaviour (CAPE-BRS,
= 0.017) and in global dementia rating (CDR,
= 0.008). Quality of life, depression and anxiety had no significant differences. The estimated number needed to treat was four for one to benefit a cognitive improvement (ADAS-Cog).
Group CST is valid for the Portuguese population with benefits for people with mild to moderate dementia.

Several biological methods have been developed to promote meat safety and to increase shelf life, mostly focusing on lactic acid bacteria from the genera Lactobacillus and Pediococcus. However, little attention has been paid to other groups of microorganisms with potential use as bioprotective cultures. This review aims to discuss the potential use of non-conventional microorganisms and biometabolites for bioprotection in meat and meat products. This review covers recent research involving the use of non-conventional microorganisms to improve the quality and safety of meat products. Bacteria that are often overlooked also have the potential for use in the food industry, either by direct application or by using their metabolites in the product itself or the development of intelligent packaging systems.
