    Learning of exceptions – those items that violate a known regularity – takes longer than learning of rule-following items. Studies reporting this disparity have used exceptions that share most of their features with members of the opposite category (crossover exceptions). Yet, exceptions can be distinctly different from members of their own category and other categories as well (oddball exceptions). Here, we trained two groups of pigeons to discriminate two categories containing regular and exception items. For one group, the exceptions were crossovers, whereas for the other, the exceptions were oddballs. Pigeons learned to classify the oddball exceptions faster than the crossover exceptions. Moreover, the regular items were learned more quickly than the crossover exceptions, but more slowly than the oddball exceptions. Deviation from the rule per se is not why exceptions are typically more difficult to learn. Rather, confusability with members of the opposite category hinders learning, whereas distinctiveness facilitates learning.Blood flow in the aorta is often assumed laminar, however aortic valve pathologies may induce transition to turbulence and our understanding of turbulence effects is incomplete. The aim of the study was to provide a detailed analysis of turbulence effects in aortic valve stenosis (AVS).

    Large-eddy simulation (LES) of flow through a patient-specific aorta with AVS was conducted. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed and used for geometric reconstruction and patient-specific boundary conditions. Computed velocity field was compared with 4D flow MRI to check qualitative and quantitative consistency. The effect of turbulence was evaluated in terms of fluctuating kinetic energy, turbulence-related wall shear stress (WSS) and energy loss.

    Our analysis suggested that turbulence was induced by a combination of a high velocity jet impinging on the arterial wall and a dilated ascending aorta which provided sufficient space for turbulence to develop. Turbulent WSS contributed to 40% of the total WSS in the ascending aorta and 38% in the entire aorta. Viscous and turbulent irreversible energy losses accounted for 3.9 and 2.7% of the total stroke work, respectively.

    This study demonstrates the importance of turbulence in assessing aortic haemodynamics in a patient with AVS. Neglecting the turbulent contribution to WSS could potentially result in a significant underestimation of the total WSS. Further work is warranted to extend the analysis to more AVS cases and patients with other aortic valve diseases.

Common causes of diarrhea include infection, side effect from medication, rejection, and malignancy. A less common but important cause of diarrhea is de novo inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This is unexpected, as these patients are already immunosuppressed. Herein, we present the case of a 45-year-old man with end-stage kidney disease because of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis who underwent preemptive kidney transplantation, with his mother as donor. His immunosuppressive regimen included methylprednisolone, mycophenolate mofetil, and tacrolimus. He had no episodes of graft dysfunction, rejection, or infectious events. Two and a half years post-transplantation, he developed bloody diarrhea. After excluding infections, colonoscopy was performed and revealed edematous mucosa and erythema with pigmentation, which are typical findings in ulcerative colitis. Despite therapy with 5-aminosalicylate and granulocyte monocyte apheresis, he presented with massive bloody diarrhea. We initiated infliximab, an anti-tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) agent. He responded very well and achieved remission within 6 months after initiation of infliximab, while administration of the other immunosuppressants was maintained. His course was uneventful and no complications developed. Management of immunosuppressants for de novo IBD after organ transplantation is complicated, because treatment of IBD, graft function protection, and prevention of infection must be considered. Following Contact Theory and prior research on diversity norms, this cross-sectional survey study examined if intergroup contact and perceived diversity norms of teachers and classmates predicted national belonging in ethnic minority (i.e., Turkish , Moroccan , and Surinamese ) versus majority students (n = 213) living in the Netherlands (Mage = 10.53 years; 50.3% female). Minority students reported less national belonging than their ethnic Dutch classmates. Multilevel analyses indicated that their national belonging was affected by the presence of ethnic Dutch classmates and the relationship with their teacher. Five-waves (from age 11.5 to 15) of multi-informant data from the PROSPER project (N = 977; 52% female; 87% Caucasian) were used to test longitudinal change in informant discrepancies between mother-, father-, and adolescent-reported aggressive behavior problems. Results showed that parents reported more aggression than their adolescents at age 11.5 and that the discrepancy at first converged over time before diverging.
