When compared to the control larvae fed with uncontaminated-pollen, both CHP and CYP significantly reduced the O. bicornis larval survival and their body mass at all tested concentrations. In contrast, ACT did not affect either larval survival or body mass, but the length of larval stage to cocoon formation was significantly shortened compared to controls. None of studied insecticides affected the mass of cocooned individuals. However, at least 80% of individuals exposed to any of the tested insecticides died before reaching the adult stage, whereas 43% of the controls emerged successfully after overwintering. Although no clear monotonic dose-response relationships were found, our study showed that at least some insecticide formulations affect the development of O. bicornis even at concentrations actually found in pollen in the field, indicating an urgent need for revising current pesticide usage recommendations.
One-third of the patients with drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) have a normal MRI, but there are only a few studies regarding the surgical outcomes and the efficacy of anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) in patients with nonlesional TLE. The objective of this study is to evaluate the surgical outcomes and efficacy of ATL in patients with nonlesional TLE.
We included 77 consecutive patients without MRI-identifiable lesions who had undergone surgical resection for drug-resistant TLE. We performed univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to identify the predictors of surgical outcomes, and the efficacy of ATL in patients with nonlesional TLE.
More than two-thirds of patients (51/76, 67.3 %) had achieved seizure freedom at the last follow-up. Presence of oroalimentary automatism, localized hypometabolism in FDG-PET, and concordant results in presurgical evaluations were associated with better surgical outcomes. Only 15 out of 77 patients (19.2 %) with nonlesional TLE were treated with ATL, and the surgically resected areas were located within the resection margin of ATL in one-third of the patients (26/77, 33.8 %). Patients with auras suggesting neocortical ictal onset and lateralizing semiological features had a higher chance that their potentially epileptogenic areas were located beyond or outside the resection margin of ATL.

Previous attempts at characterizing morphological traits indicative of high uterine volume have not been completely successful, resulting in the continued need for a reliable method of predicting reproductive value to improve production efficiency of the sow. Hence, the main objective of this study was to scrutinize macro- and micro-morphology of the sow’s reproductive tract for quantitative correlations with fertility indices. Reproductive records from Polish Landrace × Polish Large White sows were used to examine the associations between fertility and ovarian/uterine morphology (n = 34) or uterine histomorphometry (n = 10). Several measures related to the ovary, including right and left ovarian weight (r = 0.50, p = 0.005 and r = 0.49, p = 0.006, respectively), were positively correlated with the litter size, while left ovarian number of corpora lutea (r = -0.38, p = 0.04) was negatively correlated with the mean litter size. Analysis of histomorphological characteristics of the uterine wall collected during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle revealed correlations between mean litter size and myometrial vascular content (r = 0.75, p = 0.03), the proportion of myometrial stroma (r = -0.68, p = 0.03), and the variability of endometrial thickness (r = -0.72, p = 0.02) in sows. Eight ovarian, vaginal and uterine characteristics were significantly correlated with mean lifetime numbers of live born and stillborn piglets/litter or the last litter size before slaughter. In conclusion, several anatomical and histomorphological metrics that relate to reproductive performance of swine may be used to inform production protocols and as a tool for selection of elite breeding sows, warranting future research into non-invasive or minimally invasive techniques for obtaining such measures.Antibiotics are added to semen extenders to control the growth of bacteria contaminating semen during collection but may contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance. An alternative would be physical separation of spermatozoa from bacteria. The objective of the present study was to evaluate two low densities of Porcicoll for removal of bacteria, and for their effect on sperm recovery and sperm quality. Semen was collected from boars at a commercial station. Aliquots of 8 extended ejaculates were subjected to colloid centrifugation through 20% Porcicoll (P20) and 30% Porcicoll (P30) in 500 mL tubes and then stored at 17 °C. Microbiological examination and sperm quality evaluation (computer assisted sperm analysis and flow cytometry) were carried out on controls and all colloid-selected samples immediately after preparation and again after storage for 3 and 7 days. The microorganisms found were mainly bacteria from the environment, gut or skin. There was a considerable reduction or complete removal of some bacteria by both colloids. Recovery rates were 86% for P20 and 81% for P30. Sperm quality was not adversely affected by colloid centrifugation on day 0, and thereafter showed a more gradual deterioration in colloid centrifuged samples than in controls, possibly due to lower bacterial contamination. There were no differences in sperm quality between the two colloid treatments. Thus, these results show that contaminating bacteria in semen can be controlled by centrifugation through low density colloids.
