The oriented van der Waals epitaxy can be generalized to any hexagonal 2D crystals and will serve as a unique growth process to form crystals with orientations along the zigzag directions by epitaxy. © 2019 The Authors. Both small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) and ubiquitin have been reported to participate in meiotic regulation, yet functions of the SUMO-ubiquitination crosstalk in meiosis remain unclear. Here, it is reported that a SUMO-targeted ubiquitin ligase, Slx8p, promotes accurate chromosome segregation during meiosis, since the deletion of SLX8 leads to increased aneuploidy due to a defect in synaptonemal complex (SC) component degradation. Both the RING domain and SUMO interacting motifs of Slx8p are essential for meiotic progression and maintaining spore viability, and the expression of tetraubiquitin fused with SUMO partially rescues meiotic defects in the SLX8-deletion strain. Furthermore, Slx5p-Slx8p can directly add ubiquitin to SUMOylated Zip1p and Ecm11p, and forced degradation of Ecm11p partially rescues the sporulation defects of the SLX8 deletion strain. These findings provide a mechanism for SC disassembly and reveal that the crosstalk between SUMOylation and ubiquitination facilitates accurate chromosome segregation by promoting SC component degradation during meiosis. © 2019 The Authors. Sequencing results revealed that the coding regions of γ-TMT1 and γ-TMT3 were strongly similar to each other (93% at amino acid level). Based on the differences in the N-terminal amino acids, Glycine max-γ-TMT proteins are categorized into three isoforms γ-TMT1, 2 and 3. In silico structural analysis revealed the presence of chloroplast transit peptide (cTP) in γ-TMT1 and γ-TMT3 protein. However, other properties of transit peptide like presence of hydrophobic amino acids at the first three positions of N-terminal end and lower level of acidic amino acids were revealed only in γ-TMT3 protein. Subcellular localization of GFP fused γ-TMT1 and γ-TMT3 under 35S promoter was studied in Nicotiana benthamiana using confocal microscopy. Results showed that γ-TMT1 was found in the cytosol and γ-TMT3 was found to be localized both in cytosol and chloroplast. Further the presence γ-TMT3 in chloroplast was validated by quantifying α-tocopherol through UPLC. Thus the present study of cytosolic localization of the both γ-TMT1 and γ-TMT3 proteins and chloroplastic localization of γ-TMT3 will help to reveal the importance of γ-TMT encoded α-toc in protecting both chloroplastic and cell membrane from plant oxidative stress. © King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology 2020.Tarballs are semi-solid blobs of crude-oil formed in marine environment. Microbial degradation of tarballs is poorly understood, though there are indications that tarball-associated microbes can degrade recalcitrant hydrocarbons present in tarballs. In this study, 38 tarball-associated bacteria from Betul beach, Goa, India were initially screened for crude oil degradation. Based on preliminary studies and literature survey, four bacterial strains, Alcanivorax sp. Betul-O, Marinobacter sp. Osimertinib Betul-26, Pseudomonas sp. Betul-14, and Pseudomonas sp. Betul-M were selected for bacterial consortia preparation. Eleven bacterial consortia were prepared and studied for degradation of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (PAHs) of tarballs based on gravimetric and GC-MS-MS analyses. The bacterial consortia depleted 53.69-97.78% and 22.78-61.98% of n-alkanes and PAH compounds, respectively, within 45 days. Bacterial consortium comprising Pseudomonas sp. Betul-14, Pseudomonas sp. Betul-M, and Alcanivorax sp. Betul-O exhibited promising tarball degradation abilities with 97.78% and 61.98% degradation of n-alkanes and PAH, respectively, within 45 days. Further research is required to obtain insights into degradation products and possible pathways involved. © King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology 2020.In this study, we analyzed the Rc and Rd genes that are responsible for the coloration of rice pericarps from six upland rice varieties. We also examined the association of pericarp coloration to the single nucleotide polymorphism in 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase 2 (NCED2), a key gene involved in abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis. Our findings demonstrated that all the upland rice varieties analyzed have a Rd gene which encodes a complete dihydroflavonol-4-reductase without early translational termination codon irrespective of their pericarp colors. However, the upland rice varieties with white pericarps were found to have a defective Rc gene with a 14-base deletion at exon 7 which could disrupt the function of a positive regulator of proanthocyanidin biosynthesis. In addition, the NCED2 genes from the upland rice varieties with white pericarps in this study have a C-allele while the NCED2 genes from Pandasan Red, Tomou and Taragang varieties that bear red pericarps were found to have a T-allele which was reported to be associated with a higher ABA level in upland rice. A better understanding of the gene sequences of upland rice varieties with red pericarp may provide important information for rice breeding programs. © King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology 2020.Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease believed to be correlated with numerous cardiovascular risk factors including increased blood pressure, elevated blood cholesterol level, diabetes, inactivity, high body mass index (obesity) and dyslipidaemia. The present meta-analysis intends to assess the association between psoriasis and cardiovascular risk factors. Three hundred and fifty articles were primarily screened using NCBI MEDLINE/PubMed and Cochrane library from its inception until June 30, 2018. Of these, 26 observational studies depending upon the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study with 17,672 psoriasis patients and 66,407 non-psoriasis subjects. The psoriasis patients were found to be at significantly increased risk of systolic blood pressure (SBP) , diastolic blood pressure (DBP) , abdominal obesity and triglycerides as compared to non-psoriasis subjects.
