After a comprehensive geriatric assessment, frailty syndrome was found in 57 patients (55.9%). In general, both scales showed solid performance, and differences between them in the sample were minimal. As the CGA showed a prevalence of frailty of 55.9%, a similar prevalence threshold for the ZFS (i.e., 64% at the threshold ≥3 could be assessed). The completion time for our scale was less than two minutes, and staff required no training beforehand. Its sensitivity was 83.9%, and its specificity was 67.5%. Its positive predictive value was 80%, and its negative predictive value was 73%. The Pearson correlations between the geriatric scores were all strong and roughly equivalent to each other. Conclusions Our frailty screening scale is simple, relevant, and rapid (taking less than two minutes).Lactobacilli species are an effective biotherapeutic alternative against bacterial infections and intestinal inflammatory disorders. However, it is important to evaluate their beneficial properties, before considering them as probiotics for medical use. In this study we evaluated some probiotic properties of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Lactobacillus rhamnosus KLSD, Lactobacillus helveticus IMAU70129, and Lactobacillus casei IMAU60214 previously isolated from dairy products and as control Lactobacillus casei Shirota. Experimental evaluations revealed that all strains expressed hydrophobicity (25-40%), auto-aggregation (55-60%), NaCl tolerance (1-4%), adhesion to Caco-2 cells (25-33%), partial inhibition on adherence of Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028, and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 23219. Cell-free supernatants (CFS) of Lactobacilli also inhibit growth of these pathogens. In immunomodulatory properties a reduction of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and nitric oxide (NO) release was observed in assays with Caco-2 cells stimulated with interleukin-1β (1 ng/mL), or lipopolysaccharide (0.1 µg/mL). On the other hand, the damage induced to Caco-2 cells with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was attenuated when the cultured cells were pretreated with L. rhamnosus KLDS, L. helveticus IMAU70129 and L. casei IMAU60214. These Lactobacilli possess probiotic properties determined by both an antagonistic activity on pathogenic bacteria and reduction in the inflammatory response of cells treated with SDS, a pro-inflammatory stimulant. In pharmaceutical development, more and more drugs are classified as poorly water-soluble or insoluble. Particle size reduction is a common way to fight this trend by improving dissolution rate, transport characteristics and bioavailability. Pulsed laser ablation is a ground-breaking technique of drug particle generation in the nano- and micrometer size range. Meloxicam, a commonly used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with poor water solubility, was chosen as the model drug. The pastille pressed meloxicam targets were irradiated by a Tisapphire laser (τ = 135 fs, λc = 800 nm) in air and in distilled water. Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies were used for chemical characterization and scanning electron microscopy to determine morphology and size. Additional particle size studies were performed using a scanning mobility particle sizer. Our experiments demonstrated that significant particle size reduction can be achieved with laser ablation both in air and in distilled water without any chemical change of meloxicam. The size of the ablated particles (~50 nm to a few microns) is approximately at least one-tenth of the size (~10-50 micron) of commercially available meloxicam crystals. Furthermore, nanoaggregate formation was described during pulsed laser ablation in air, which was scarcely studied for drug/organic molecules before.Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial pathogen capable of causing serious infections associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Due to its antimicrobial drug resistance profile, A. baumannii is categorized as an urgent priority pathogen by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States and a priority group 1 critical microorganism by the World Health Organization. Understanding how A. baumannii adapts to different host environments may provide critical insights into strategically targeting this pathogen with novel antimicrobial and biological therapeutics. Exposure to human fluids was previously shown to alter the gene expression profile of a highly drug-susceptible A. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Rapamycin.html baumannii strain A118 leading to persistence and survival of this pathogen. Herein, we explore the impact of human pleural fluid (HPF) and human serum albumin (HSA) on the gene expression profile of a highly multi-drug-resistant strain of A. baumannii AB5075. Differential expression was observed for ~30 genes, whose products are involved in quorum sensing, quorum quenching, iron acquisition, fatty acid metabolism, biofilm formation, secretion systems, and type IV pilus formation. Phenotypic and further transcriptomic analysis using quantitative RT-PCR confirmed RNA-seq data and demonstrated a distinctive role of HSA as the molecule involved in A. baumannii’s response. The aim of the study was to examine the prevalence of suicide thoughts and attempts during the early stage of the COVID-19 outbreak and examine pandemic-related factors associated with suicide thoughts in the general Norwegian population. A sample of 4527 adults living in Norway were recruited via social media. Data related to suicide thoughts and attempts, alcohol use, pandemic-related concerns, and sociodemographic variables were collected. Associations with suicide thoughts were analyzed with logistic regression analysis. In the sample, 3.6% reported suicide thoughts during the last month, while 0.2% had attempted suicide during the same period. Previous suicide attempts (OR 11.93, p less then 0.001), lower age (OR 0.69, p less then 0.001), daily alcohol use (OR 3.31, p less then 0.001), being in the risk group for COVID-19 complications (OR 2.15, p less then 0.001), and having economic concerns related to the pandemic (OR 2.28, p less then 0.001) were associated with having current suicide thoughts.
