To assess the attitudes, knowledge, and experiences of Brazilian resident physicians regarding religiosity/spirituality (R/S), factors associated with addressing this issue, and its influence on clinical practice.
We report results of the multicenter “Spirituality in Brazilian Medical Residents” (SBRAMER) study involving 7 Brazilian university centers. The Network for Research Spirituality and Health (NERSH) scale (collecting sociodemographic data, opinions about the R/S-health interface, and respondents’ R/S characteristics) and the Duke Religion Index were self-administered. Logistic regression models were constructed to determine those factors associated with residents’ opinions on spirituality in clinical practice.
The sample comprised 879 resident physicians (53.5% of total) from all years of residency with 71.6% from clinical specialties. In general, the residents considered themselves spiritual and religious, despite not regularly attending religious services. Most participants believed R/S had aions and produce content on the subject in residency programs.
Brazilian resident physicians held that religious and spiritual beliefs can influence health, and deemed it appropriate for physicians to discuss this issue. Dysregulation of the serine protease activity from these cells underlies different diseases. In the past, the technique of activity-based protein profiling proved to be especially useful for the study of proteases, and various studies have used small-molecule activity-based probes to covalently label and detect serine proteases from immune cells. In this review, we give an overview of the different activity-based probes that have been designed for serine proteases and how their selectivity can be steered. We also discuss how these have been utilized in the detection of various serine proteases from immune cells by different analysis methods (gel electrophoresis, microscopy and flow cytometry) and what biological insights these studies have produced. Overall, activity-based protein profiling has the potential to address functional aspects of serine proteases in the immune system and future efforts may bring translation into clinical application.Fronto-striatal structural connectivity is associated with choice impulsivity. Yet, to date, whether distinct fronto-striatal functional coupling associates with impulsive choices are largely unknown. Using seed-based resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) combined with multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), the present study aimed to explore the predictions of dissociable frontal-striatal functional connectivity on choice impulsivity in a relatively large sample (N = 429). Adaptive delay-discounting task was utilized to assess choice impulsivity and the striatum was further divided into three subregions including the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), caudate, and putamen. Results revealed that both the functional coupling between the NAcc and the limbic/dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and between the caudate and the dorsal prefrontal cortex, including the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC), successfully predicted the delay-discounting rate. However, such pattern was not observed in the putamen-prefrontal functional connectivity. These findings suggest fronto-striatal-dependent neural mechanisms of choice impulsivity and further provide a better understanding of the contributions of striatum subregions and their functional connectivities with different areas of prefrontal cortex upon inter-temporal choice.Direct PCR can be used to successfully generate full STR profiles from DNA present on the surface of objects. STR profiles are only of use in cases where a potential donor profile is available for comparison, and DNA is of sufficient DNA quality and quantity to generate a reliable profile. Often, no donor information is available and only trace DNA is present on items. As a result, alternative techniques are required to generate genetic data that can provide investigative leads. Massively parallel sequencing (MPS) offers the ability to detect trace levels of DNA and improve DNA analysis success from touched items. Here, we present the first application of direct PCR coupled with MPS to generate forensic intelligence SNP data from latent DNA. The panels assessed are (1) the HIrisplex System that targets 24 SNPs to simultaneously predict hair and eye, and (2) the Precision ID Ancestry Panel that targets 165 autosomal SNPs indicative of biogeographic ancestry. For each panel, we analysed 60 touched samples across five individuals and four substrates (glass slide, fuse, zip-lock bag and wire) using Ion AmpliSeq Library Preparation Kit on the automated Ion Chef System and Ion Torrent PGM. We examine the SNP recovery, concordance with reference samples and the genotype reproducibility from different substrates and donors. The results demonstrate the application of this approach for obtaining informative genetic from trace amounts of DNA.
