The angular position and FWHM of the Fano resonances strongly depend on the refractive index of the sensing medium. ATR spectra were fitted by using the transfer-matrix method. Additionally, we found that angular sensitivity and figure of merit increase with increasing the refractive index of the sensing medium.The apoptotic protease-activating factor 1 (Apaf-1) split luciferase biosensor has been used as a biological tool for the detection of early stage of apoptosis. The effect of doxorubicin in a cell-based assay and the addition of cytochrome c and ATP in a cell-free system have been used to test the functionality of the reporter for the detection of apoptosome formation. Here, our data established a drug- and cytochrome c/ATP-independent way of apoptosis induction relying on the expression of the biosensor itself to induce formation of apoptosome. Overexpression of Apaf-1 constructs led to increased split luciferase activity and caspase-3 activity in the absence of any drug treatment. Caspase-3 activity was significantly inhibited when caspase-9DN was co-overexpressed, while the activity of the Apaf1 biosensor was significantly increased. Our results show that the Apaf-1 biosensor does not detect etoposide-induced apoptosis.The smooth variable structure filter (SVSF) is a new-type filter based on the sliding-mode concepts and has good stability and robustness in overcoming the modeling uncertainties and errors. However, SVSF is insufficient to suppress Gaussian noise. A novel smooth variable structure smoother (SVSS) based on SVSF is presented here, which mainly focuses on this drawback and improves the SVSF estimation accuracy of the system. The estimation of the linear Gaussian system state based on SVSS is divided into two steps Firstly, the SVSF state estimate and covariance are computed during the forward pass in time. Then, the smoothed state estimate is computed during the backward pass by using the innovation of the measured values and covariance estimate matrix. According to the simulation results with respect to the maneuvering target tracking, SVSS has a better performance compared with another smoother based on SVSF and the Kalman smoother in different tracking scenarios. Therefore, the SVSS proposed in this paper could be widely applied in the field of state estimation in dynamic system.Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by a progressive loss of renal function and a decrease of glomerular filtration rate. Reduced mitochondrial function, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and increased oxidative stress in patients with CKD contribute to the disease progression. We tested whether CoQ10 levels, oxidative stress and platelet mitochondrial bioenergetic function differ between groups of CKD patients. METHODS Twenty-seven CKD patients were enrolled in this trial, 17 patients had arterial hypertension (AH) and 10 patients had arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus (AH and DM). The control group consisted of 12 volunteers. A high-resolution respirometry (HRR) method was used for the analysis of mitochondrial bioenergetics in platelets, and an HPLC method with UV detection was used for CoQ10 determination in platelets, blood, and plasma. Oxidative stress was determined as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). RESULTS Platelets mitochondrial respiration showed slight, not significant differences between the groups of CKD patients and control subjects. The oxygen consumption by intact platelets positively correlated with the concentration of CoQ10 in the platelets of CKD patients. CONCLUSION A decreased concentration of CoQ10 and oxidative stress could contribute to the progression of renal dysfunction in CKD patients. This work has been focused on the study of polyphenol extraction of the extractive fraction by water ultrasound-assisted extraction. Selected extraction conditions were 47 °C and 21.7 mL water/gdry-BSG. The effect of solvent polarity on polyphenol extraction was studied by using ethanol aqueous mixtures, from 20% to 100% ethanol. The kinetics of polyphenol extraction have been fitted to the power law and the Weibull models yielding mean values of the root mean square deviation lower than 7.5%. Extracts have been characterized in terms of quantification of individual phenolic compounds by HPLC-DAD and protein and sugar soluble fractions (glucose, xylose, and arabinose). Polyphenol profile has been compared with other hydrolytic techniques, such as acid, basic and enzymatic hydrolysis, showing that ultrasound was not as effective as basic hydrolysis to release the phenolic acids esterified to the cell wall. Mineral composition of the soil and its microscopic characteristics were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the 4.5% fulvic acid added in the sediment can enhance the migration ability of Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions through complexation, and simultaneously effectively reduce the formation of colloids with the average reductions of Cu2+ ions and Zn2+ ions being 28 and 11 mg/kg, respectively.
