African American women with breast cancer generally rely on their spirituality to cope with psychosocial issues encountered during survivorship. However, in order to mitigate the risk of contracting COVID-19, a potentially deadly disease, it is imperative that community-dwelling older adults physically distance themselves from supportive family, friends, and even traditional faith-based activities. In this report, we explore the ways in which spirituality was used to manage stressors during this pandemic. This is a qualitative descriptive study with content analysis of data from the narratives from 18 African American breast cancer survivors. Participants were interviewed via phone and video conferencing platform and asked to respond to questions of strategies used to manage stressors encountered during this COVID-19 pandemic. this website Spirituality enabled African American breast cancer survivors to better manage their psychological distress through (1) increased engagement in religious activities; (2) reliance on God for protection when fearful, feeling isolated, and in need of assistance to pay household bills; (3) finding joy and courage from listening to gospel music and reading scripture; and (4) finding meaning through spirituality. These findings suggest that in spite of physical distancing requirements that impose limited access to faith-based institutions during this COVID-19 pandemic, spirituality continues to be a supportive resource to manage emotional stressors.

Trichomonas tenax (T. tenax) is a commensal flagellated protozoan found in periodontal microenvironment of the oral cavity, with a possible role in periodontal diseases. The purpose of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the worldwide prevalence of T. tenax infection and to show the neglected association of this parasitic infection with oral diseases.

To find literatures published until August 2020, five English databases (PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science and Google Scholar) were explored. Finally, 65 papers were qualified to be included in the current study.

Our results revealed a global pooled prevalence of 17% (95% CI 14-22%) for T. tenax infection. The highest prevalence was estimated at 56% (42-69%) in Chile, while the lowest prevalence was related to Kenya with 3% (1-6%). The age-based analysis found that the infection was most common in 46-55 mean age group with 15% (0-100%). The overall prevalence regarding culture method, molecular method and direct method was 21% (12-32%), 19% (8-35%) and 17% (12-23%), respectively. Moreover, the subgroup analysis showed the pooled prevalence in patient with candidiasis , gingivitis and periodontitis .

Our study specified a connection between T. tenax protozoa and periodontitis disease. However, more epidemiological studies as well as clinical trials are needed to precisely identify this relation.

Emerging evidence points to differences in the execution of the genetic program as a key source of variation, be it stochastic variation or programmed variation. Here we discuss variation in gene expression as an intrinsic property and how it could contribute to variation in traits, including the rate of aging. The review is divided into sections describing the historical context and evidence to date for nongenetic variation, the different approaches that may be used to detect nongenetic variation, and recent findings showing that the amount of variation in gene expression can be both genetically programmed and epigenetically controlled. Finally, we present evidence that changes in cell-to-cell variation in gene expression emerge as part of the aging process and may be linked to disease vulnerability as a function of age. These emerging concepts are likely to be important across the spectrum of biomedical research and may well underpin what we understand as biological aging.

The new coronavirus outbreak originated in Wuhan, China, started in January 2020 is escalating as a pandemic across the globe in March 2020. It causes unprecedented morbidity and shocked health systems and the supply chains in new epicenters such as Italy, Spain, and the USA, claiming thousands of lives. Meanwhile, the pandemic is reaching swiftly and silently to low-income countries where international media cover less. How likely health outcomes among the countries with different economies may differ during the pandemic has not been reported yet. Methodologically, we conducted an analysis of COVID-19 deaths comparing case fatality rate (CFR) among countries with different income categories, applying COVID-19 global data from the European Centre for Disease Control including 199 countries’ data as of 31 March 2020, in the early phase of the pandemic. We categorized countries into high-income countries (HIC), upper-middle-income countries (UMIC), lower-middle-income countries (LMIC), and low-income countrievent unprecedented deaths, but also preserve the momentum towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Intrapelvic aberrant needles are rare in clinical practice. Long-term foreign bodies in the abdominal cavity may form granulation tissue or an abscess, and may cause organ injury. Therefore, such foreign bodies need prompt removal.

A 26-year-old male athlete was referred to our hospital for investigation of an aberrant acupuncture needle in the gluteus. The needle was unable to be removed during acupuncture treatment, and the end broke off and remained in the gluteus. Abdominal X-ray examination showed a thin, 40-mm-long, metallic foreign body resembling an acupuncture needle. Abdominal computed tomography showed an abnormal shadow in the gluteus. However, it was unclear whether the tip of the needle reached the pelvic cavity. Thus, it was decided to surgically extract the needle via laparoscopic surgery under X-ray guidance as a safe and minimally invasive method. Although X-ray fluoroscopy confirmed that the aberrant needle was located in the gluteus, the needle could not be felt with the forceps, as the peritoneum surrounding the needle had granulomatous changes due to inflammation.
