Multiple fieldwork seasons performed by Japanese-Kenyan teams during the last part of the 20th century resulted in the discovery of a large sample of Nacholapithecus fossils. Here, we describe the new femoral remains of Nacholapithecus. In well-preserved specimens, we evaluate sex differences and within-species variation using both qualitative and quantitative traits. We use these data to determine whether these specimens are morphologically similar to the species holotype KNM-BG 35250 (which shows some plastic deformation) and to compare Nacholapithecus with other Miocene hominoids and extant anthropoids to evaluate the distinctiveness of its femur. The new fossil evidence reaffirms previously reported descriptions of some distal femoral traits, namely the morphology of the patellar groove. However, results also show that relative femoral head size in Nacholapithecus is smaller, relative neck length is longer, and neck-shaft angle is lower than previously reported for KNM-BG 35250. These traits have a strong functional signal related to the hip joint kinematics, suggesting that the morphology of the proximal femur in Nacholapithecus might be functionally related to quadrupedal-like behaviors instead of more derived antipronograde locomotor modes. Results further demonstrate that other African Miocene apes (with the exception of Turkanapithecus kalakolensis) generally fall within the Nacholapithecus range of variation, whose overall femoral shape resembles that of Ekembo spp. and Equatorius africanus. Our results accord with the previously inferred locomotor repertoire of Nacholapithecus, indicating a combination of generalized arboreal quadrupedalism combined with other antipronograde behaviors (e.g., vertical climbing).
DNA methylation is a potential biological mechanism through which residential greenness affects health, but little is known about its association with greenness and whether the association could be modified by genetic background. We aimed to evaluate the association between surrounding greenness and genome-wide DNA methylation and potential gene-greenness interaction effects on DNA methylation.
We measured blood-derived DNA methylation using the HumanMethylation450 BeadChip array (Illumina) for 479 Australian women, including 66 monozygotic, 66 dizygotic twin pairs, and 215 sisters of these twins. Surrounding greenness was represented by Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) within 300, 500, 1000 or 2000m surrounding participants’ home addresses. For each cytosine-guanine dinucleotide (CpG), the associations between its methylation level and NDVI or EVI were evaluated by generalized estimating equations, after adjusting for age, education, marital status, area-lunding greenness was associated with blood DNA methylation of many loci across human genome, and this association could be modified by genetic variations.

How the dynamic interaction between short-lived retinal images and extra-retinal signals of eye motion results in our subjective experience of visual stability remains a major issue in Cognitive Neuroscience. The present study aimed to assess and determine the nature of the contribution of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) to the saccadic remapping mechanisms which contribute to such perceptual visual constancy. Perceptual responses in transsaccadic visual localization tasks were measured in a patient presenting with a PPC lesion and manifesting optic ataxia in the left hemifield with no neglect. Two perceptual localization tasks, each with versus without an intervening saccade, were used the saccadic suppression of displacement (SSD) task (Ostendorf, Liebermann, & Ploner, 2010) and the peri-saccadic flash localization (LOC) task (Zimmerman & Lappe, 2010). Compared to a group of age-matched healthy subjects, the patient showed a specific pattern of perceptual deficits in the ataxic (left) hemifield. First, a significant impairment occurred in the stationary eye conditions, attesting for an alteration of visuo-spatial encoding. Second, in the saccade conditions, an additional perceptual deficit (an error of ~5° along the saccade direction) was observed in both tasks and mainly in conditions where extra-retinal signals are thought to be critically involved, revealing a constant underestimation by extra-retinal signals of the saccade size, despite preserved saccade accuracy. These findings highlight a crucial role of the PPC in saccadic remapping processes underlying perceptual visual constancy and provide empirical evidence for models such as Ziesche and Hamker’s (2014).
