BACKGROUND Articulatory excursion and vocal intensity are reduced in many children with dysarthria due to cerebral palsy (CP), contributing to the children’s intelligibility deficits and negatively affecting their social participation. However, the effects of speech-treatment strategies for improving intelligibility in this population are understudied, especially for children who speak languages other than English. In a cueing study on English-speaking children with dysarthria, acoustic variables and intelligibility improved when the children were provided with cues aimed to increase articulatory excursion and vocal intensity. While French is among the top 20 most spoken languages in the world, dysarthria and its management in French-speaking children are virtually unexplored areas of research. Information gleaned from such research is critical for providing an evidence base on which to provide treatment. AIMS To examine acoustic and perceptual changes in the speech of French-speaking children with dysarthriaion and vocal intensity show promise for improving the ease of understanding of words produced by francophone children with dysarthria, although improvements may be modest. The variability in the responses also suggests that this population may benefit from a combination of such cues to produce words that are easier to understand. © 2020 Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.Interleukin polymorphisms might influence predisposition to lung cancer (LC), but the results of already published studies regarding the relationship between interleukin polymorphisms and LC were still controversial and ambiguous. So the authors designed this meta-analysis to more precisely estimate relationship between interleukin polymorphisms and LC by pooling the results of already published related studies. The authors searched Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and CNKI for already published studies. Thirty-five already published studies were pooled and analyzed in this meta-analysis. The pooled meta-analyses results showed that distributions of IL-4 rs2243250 polymorphism among patients and controls from Asian countries differed significantly (dominant comparison OR = 1.29, 95% CI 1.07-1.55; overdominant comparison OR = 0.83, 95% CI 0.73-0.95; allele comparison OR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.03-1.54), and distributions of IL-10 rs1800872 polymorphism among patients and controls from Caucasian countries also differed significantly (recessive comparison OR = 0.54, 95% CI 0.35-0.83; overdominant comparison OR = 1.26, 95% CI 1.05.1.51). No genotypic distribution differences were observed for IL-4 rs2070874, IL-6 rs1800795, IL-6 rs1800796, IL-8 rs4073, IL-10 rs1800871, and IL-10 rs1800896 polymorphisms in pooled meta-analyses. This meta-analysis suggested that IL-4 rs2243250 might influence predisposition to LC in Asians, whereas IL-10 rs1800872 polymorphism might influence predisposition to LC in Caucasians. © 2020 International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.INTRODUCTION The primary study objective was to characterize the pattern of in-hospital mortality in dogs with gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), with a focus on preoperative nonsurvival. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review of medical records from a 10-year period was undertaken at a university teaching hospital. Data collected included signalment, physical examination parameters at hospital presentation, blood lactate concentration, and outcome. RESULTS A total of 498 dogs were included. Overall, 319 (64.1%) survived to discharge and 179 (35.9%) were nonsurvivors. Of the nonsurvivors, 149 (31.3% of all dogs) were euthanized and 30 (6%) died. Of those dogs euthanized, the majority (n = 116) were euthanized at the time of hospital presentation prior to surgery (ie, without intent to treat). When dogs that were euthanized prior to surgery were excluded, 83.5% of dogs survived to discharge. Median group age was higher in those euthanized than in the group of dogs that survived to discharge. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative euthanasia and hence nonsurvival without intent to treat accounted for the majority of GDV mortality in this study. Given the high rate of nonsurvival without intent to treat it is likely that efforts focused at disease prevention will ultimately affect a much greater improvement in overall disease mortality than those focused on improving treatment. © Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society 2020.’The Hagfeldt donor’ is a bulky triarylamine building block with 4 alkyl chains in a 3-dimensional arrangement which is used with organic dyes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) in over 140 manuscripts. KGaA, Weinheim.BACKGROUND Hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) can be used in vitro to simulate oxidative stress. In retinal organ cultures, H2 O2 induces strong neurodegeneration of the retina. It is known that oxidative stress plays a role in the development of several retinal diseases including glaucoma and ischemia. Thus, we investigated whether processes underlying oxidative stress can be prevented by hypothermia using an ex vivo organ culture model of porcine retinas. METHODS Porcine retinal explants were cultivated for 5 and 8 days. Oxidative stress was induced via 300 μM H2 O2 on day 1 for 3 hours. Hypothermia treatment at 30°C was applied simultaneously with H2 O2 , for 3 hours. Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), apoptosis, bipolar and cholinergic amacrine cells, microglia and macroglia were evaluated immunohistologically. Apoptosis rate was additionally analysed via western blot. RESULTS Reduced apoptosis rates through hypothermia led to a preservation of RGCs (P less then .001).
