Interactions between monkeys and birds are rarely observed and, consequently, rarely described in the scientific literature. We recorded two encounters between birds (Prionops plumatus and Strix woodfordii) and red-tailed monkeys (Cercopithecus ascanius) in a woodland-mosaic habitat in western Tanzania. We observed a male red-tailed monkey consume a small bird in its entirety. Although only a few feathers remained, we provisionally identified the bird as a white-crested helmetshrike. We also observed a group of red-tailed monkeys mobbing, but not killing, an African wood owl on the forest floor. This is the first reported observation of this kind. These encounters suggest that guenons may generalize large-bodied avians as threats and small-bodied avians as potential prey. Hetero-specific encounters such as these provide insights into primate diet and anti-predatory behavior.Purpose To evaluate the retinal microvascular density using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) treated with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). Methods Nineteen eyes of 19 patients with SLE (study group) without HCQ retinopathy and 19 eyes of 19 healthy subjects (control group) were included in this study. The study group was divided into patients using HCQ for > 5 years (high-risk group) and less then 5 years (low-risk group). The VD data of the 3 × 3 mm OCT angiogram of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and the choriocapillaris (VD-CC), the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area and the central retinal thickness (CRT) were extracted and analyzed. Results VD in the en face SCP was significantly reduced in the high-risk group and the low-risk group compared with that in the control group (p less then 0.001, p = 0.001) and in the high-risk group compared with the low-risk group (p = 0.007). Correlation analysis between the cumulative dose of HCQ and the VD of the study group revealed a negative correlation, but no statistical significance (p = 0.074). However, a significant positive correlation was observed for the low-risk group (p = 0.035). In patients with SLE, VD-CC was lower (p = 0.042) and the FAZ area larger (p = 0.019). CRT showed no difference between the groups (p = 0.183). Conclusion In this study, SLE patients showed a reduced VD in both groups. In patients treated with HCQ less then 5 years, HCQ might have a protective effect on retinal microvasculature. Analysis of retinal microvascular density using OCTA could be useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of vascular alteration in patients with SLE.Purpose The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of intracameral preservative-free triamcinolone acetonide (TA) on reducing inflammatory reactions after pediatric cataract surgery. Methods Researches were comprehensively searched in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up to 30 November, 2019. Data of interest were extracted and analyzed by Review Manager 5.2. The primary outcome was cell deposits. The secondary outcomes included posterior synechias, fibrinous anterior chamber reaction, visual axis obscuration, and posterior capsule opacification. see more The odds ratio (OR), weight mean difference (WMD), and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were used to assess the strength of the association. Results In total, 45 articles were obtained. Finally, 5 studies with a total of 308 eyes were enrolled in this meta-analysis. Among these, 134 eyes underwent intracameral TA treatment and 174 eyes did not. In intracameral TA treatment group, the incidence of cell deposits (OR = 0.35, 95% CI 0.16-0.76, P = 0.008), posterior synechias (OR = 0.44, 95% CI 0.23-0.86, P = 0.02), and fibrinous anterior chamber reaction (OR = 0.12, 95% CI 0.01-1.05, P = 0.05) were lower compared to those in patients without intracameral TA treatment. Meanwhile, the incidence of visual axis obscuration (OR = 0.10, 95% CI 0.01-0.85, P = 0.04) and posterior capsule opacification (OR = 0.09, 95% CI 0.02-0.55, P = 0.009) were also reduced significantly. The intraocular pressure (IOP) was evaluated at the first month postoperatively (WMD = 0.84 mmHg, 95% CI 0.14-1.53, P = 0.02), but within the normal range. There was no difference of IOP between two groups at 6 months or above after operation (P = 0.93). Conclusions The intracameral preservative-free TA in pediatric cataract surgery contributed to much less inflammatory reaction with the normal IOP range.Purpose To analyze the impact of the dose to the optic disc and the irradiated length of the optic nerve on radiation-induced optic neuropathy, radiation-induced retinopathy, iris neovascularization, secondary glaucoma, enucleation, and local tumor control after proton beam therapy (PBT) of choroidal melanoma. Method Retrospective analysis of 1129 patients, who received primary PBT for the treatment of choroidal melanoma with a dose of 60 cobalt gray equivalents (CGE) between 1998 and 2013 at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Germany. Kaplan-Meier curves and logrank test have been used for time-to-event analyses. Adjustment for potential confounders was done using multiple Cox regression models with forward and backward selection. Results We found a significant correlation between the irradiated length of the optic nerve and the dose to the optic disc (correlation coefficient, 0.93). Multivariate Cox regression revealed the dose to the optic disc as an independent predictive risk factor for the development of radiation-induced optic neuropathy (p less then 0.001, HR 1.023, 95 CI 1.016-1.029), iris neovascularization (p less then 0.001, HR 1.013, 95% CI 1.008-1.019), secondary glaucoma (p less then 0.001, HR 1.017, 95% CI 1.011-1.023) and enucleation (p less then 0.001, HR 1.037, 95% CI 1.020-1.053). The irradiated length of the optic nerve was not a statistically independent predictive risk factor in multivariate analysis. Conclusion Our data implicate the predominance of the dose to the optic disc over the irradiated length of the optic nerve regarding radiation-induced optic neuropathy, iris neovascularization, secondary glaucoma, and enucleation.
