Although copper (Cu)-containing compounds are not used for management of X. fastidiosa-caused diseases, they are widely used in X. fastidiosa hosts in vineyards and orchards. The accumulation of Cu in soils, and therefore plant saps, could be a challenge for X. fastidiosa survival. Here, the molecular basis of Cu homeostasis was studied in relation to virulence. Although homologous Cu-related genes copA (X. fastidiosa loci PD0100) and copB (PD0101) have been characterized in other bacteria, their functions differ among bacterial species. In vitro, both copA and copB mutants were more sensitive to Cu than the wild-type (WT) strain. Interestingly, the copA mutant was more sensitive to Cu shock, while the copB mutant was more sensitive to chronic Cu treatments. In tobacco greenhouse experiments with normal watering, both mutants reduced virulence compared to WT. But when Cu was added as a drench treatment, both copA and copB mutants had increased disease severity ~20% and ~50% compared to mutants without Cu added, respectively, which were significantly higher than the ~5% observed for WT under the same conditions. These results indicate that the pathogen’s Cu homeostasis affects virulence and is influenced by Cu concentration in the environment. Understanding Cu homeostasis in X. fastidiosa will help discern the outcome of Cu treatments and the adaptation of this pathogen to the xylem of plants that have been exposed to high Cu concentrations due to agricultural practices. An efficient method for the synthesis of 1-isopropyl-4-isothiocyanato-4-methylcyclohex-1-ene has been developed with p-menth-3-en-1-amine as raw material. Next, a number of p-menth-3-en-1-amine thiourea derivatives (4a-f) have been obtained from the reactions between 1-isopropyl-4-isothiocyanato-4-methylcyclohex-1-ene and cyclohexylamine or the reactions between p-menth-3-en-1-amine and different isothiocyanates. Then, the herbicidal activities of these compounds were evaluated. The result indicated that some of these newly synthesised compounds displayed remarkable herbicidal activities against annual ryegrass. In addition, the derivative containing cyclohexane ring (4a) displayed much higher herbicidal activity against annual ryegrass than the derivatives containing benzene ring.SUPER GL compact is a bench-top analyzer for glucose, lactate, and hemoglobin concentrations. Glucose measurements in the biosensor are based on an enzymatic-amperometric reaction of glucose with glucose oxidase. In this study, trueness and precision were assessed with Standard Reference Material 965b (National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD) for 2 SUPER GL compact (S1 and S2) and 1 YSI 2300 STAT Plus (Y) device, using a protocol based on CLSI EP05-A3.Precision was similar among S1, S2, and Y. S1 and S2 exhibited negative bias at low concentrations and positive bias at high concentrations, whereas Y showed negative bias that increased with higher concentrations. Overall, SUPER GL compact’s performance was comparable to that of YSI 2300 STAT Plus. This is a summary of a publication about the ARAMIS (Androgen Receptor Antagonizing Agent for Metastasis-free Survival) trial, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2020. The trial was in adult participants with nonmetastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC) who received a trial treatment called darolutamide (brand name Nubeqa®). Darolutamide is currently available as an oral treatment for adults with nmCRPC. The ARAMIS trial looked at darolutamide taken by mouth in 1509 participants from 36 countries with nmCRPC (prostate cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body and no longer responds adequately to initial hormone therapy). Estradiol Benzoate mouse The trial showed that darolutamide in addition to hormone therapy increased the length of time that the trial participants were still alive for and lowered the risk of death by 31% compared with placebo (sugar pill) and hormone therapy. The participants who received darolutamide and hormone therapy also had longer time to worsening pain, needing chemotherapy, and having cancer-related bone fractures or symptoms related to cancer-related bone fractures compared with those who received placebo and hormone therapy during the trial. In general, the percentage of participants who experienced medical problems (referred to as adverse events) was similar between those who received darolutamide and those who received placebo, in addition to hormone therapy. This summary also includes insights and perspectives from a participant who was in the ARAMIS trial and from a prostate cancer patient advocate. Clinical Trial Registration NCT02200614 (ClinicalTrials.gov).Population growth directly affects the global food supply, demanding a higher production efficiency without farmland expansion – in view of limited land resources and biodiversity loss worldwide. In such scenario, intensive agriculture practices have been widely used. A commonly applied method to maximize yield in animal production is the use of subtherapeutic doses of antibiotics as growth promoters. Because of the strong antibiotic selection pressure generated, the intense use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) has been associated to the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Also, cross-resistance can occur, leading to the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens and limiting treatment options in both human and animal health. Thereon, alternatives have been studied to replace AGP in animal production. Among such alternatives, essential oils and essential oil components (EOC) stand out positively from others due to, besides antimicrobial effectiveness, improving zootechnical indexes and modulating genes involved in resistance mechanisms.
